that would only delay the problem, ad providers are always looking to outsmart ad blockers, that's why i asked here, for a definitive solution, or a feature request if there isn't any

Firefox is a browser, and not an adblocker; if ABP isn't working well, then you'd best follow FredMcD's advice.

just a simple "are you sure you want to open a new tab" confirmation whenever document.open of something like that gets called

    What kind of new tabs and windows are you referring to, though ?     Tabs and windows should never open without action from you .....

they never do, only onClick events, but things like transparent overlays are always used to harvest clicks

Check and evaluate each option of the Privacy & Security of the Preferences and set the Enhanced tracking protections to strict.

I allow pop-ups because of my choice to see search results of DuckDuckGo in a separate tab, and this is considered by Firefox a pop-up.

The FF Preferences settings might be a bit different between Windows and Linux or MacOS versions.

I no longer use blockers and have no security problems.

already have block all, but at least on windows that's not enough never had problems with DuckDuckGo being blocked

since this post seems to be going nowhere I'll ask, is it possible for an add-on to intersect the "create window" and "create tab" calls or are those too low level to be affected?

I'll try it, but i doubt it will solve anything, since the problem is seemingly unrelated to redirects

You can try to block pop-up windows by going under: Options > Privacy & Security> Permissions and then check the box saying Block pop-up windows.

both those settings are already on. The problem is not about settings, it's about intrusive content ignoring them and adblocks

Going over this thread again I'm still not sure what exactly it is that you are talking about, but I think that you will find the best advice in the first (FredMcD's) post.
