How to stop firefox from freezing entire pc until mouse is moved

more options

When two buttons are clicked at the same time, on a website, from a touch panel, it freezes the entire computer, until the mouse is moved. It does not do this with Chrome, Edge, or earlier versions of Firefox. This is a big problem for us. Is there a way to stop Firefox from doing this? I have tested this on multiple computers, with the same results.

Hi colincostello,

I am sorry to hear you are having issues with Firefox freezing on your computers. Looking back at prior recommendations with similar issues was to run MalwareBytes as this seems to be commonly caused by malware.

You could also try starting in Safe Mode. If you are syncing add-ons across your computer this will disable them for troubleshooting.

If there is no improvement in Safe Mode, you could try creating a New Profile and test it to see if the issues is resolved.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

Thanks for your suggestions, after further testing, it appears Firefox is freezing when an <image> or <a> tag is tapped repeatedly with 2 fingers.

This is only happening in Firefox. Is there a way to disable two finger tapping?

hi colincostello, when you say this problem didn't happen in earlier versions of firefox could you specify which version of firefox was the last known "good" version and which version are you using right now that's affected by this problem?

I am using the newest version 69. It doesn't do it in firefox 31. I have tried multiple other versions between 50 and 69 and it seems to be doing it in all that I tested.

Hi colincostello,

You could try Firefox Nightly as a short term remedy. This version allows you to try out the latest features and provide feedback as this is for development purposes and updated daily.

I worked around the issue by replacing all <image> and <a> tags from the page with div's
