Profile lost during update

more options

Initially installed FF version 63 on 10/10/ 2018 and has exceeded my expectations. I launch it today and everything is gone. It looked like a fresh install. I got a momentary notification that Firefox had updated successfully. This issue is similar to https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1223868. I do have a "Old Firefox Date" folder on my desktop. I added a new Profile and copied the necessary files from the folder on my desktop. Problem is...no bookmarks, favicons, login info, etc. I'm not real happy about this because Firefox has the ability to delete profiles and add new ones without notification and then corrupt or lose all my old info. I can't believe I allowed Firefox to update without notification. First of all, what happened and secondly , how do I get info back that isn't where it's supposed to be?

I love it. The user has absolutely no say-so as to whether Firefox will install auto-updates. I uninstalled Firefox and made sure to delete all documentation folders ....mozilla\firefox\profiles...etc. This time installed v. 62 Nightly. I Selected "Never Ask to Install Updates" and restarted. At startup I was advised the Firefox is installing updates and it did so to v. 63. Chrome has its flaws, but nothing quite as egregious as this. That confirms in the issue that started this I remember checking "Check for updates but let you choose to install..." Firefox auto installed the updates that created the problem above.

Hi cactusdr, in your Old Firefox Data, do you have a bookmarkbackups folder with files from before the bookmark apocalypse? Each file should have the date and number of items coded into its name. (The files are compressed, so don't try to open them directly.)

If you copied those files to the corresponding bookmarkbackups folder in your new profile, then you should be able to restore one of them using the Restore menu in the Library window, as described in the following article:

Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer

Please do not install old versions of Nightly. It's better to stick with the Release channel unless you like testing bleeding edge/unstable software. Also, as the name implies, Nightly updates every day.
