Sorry, Firefox 62 no longer shows the "Description" field for bookmarks. The data is still available, but can't be viewed within Firefox. To access that data:

Export Bookmarks to a locally saved Web Page (HTML File)

Please see this article: Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks. That creates a web page, so you can open it in a Firefox tab, or in any browser. You'll notice the descriptions nested below the linked titles of the bookmarks that have descriptions.

Please do this now, because Firefox 64 is expected to delete the data.

Next steps:

This depends on your needs:

(A) If you just need to consult the existing descriptions, the HTML file may be good enough. There also are other solutions for storing logins that you can adopt over time.

(B) If you need to occasionally update the descriptions but don't need them within Firefox, then you could consider using a reference program such as Zotero (more info below) to store your bookmarks and descriptions.

(C) If you can't live without integrated bookmark descriptions, you may consider the Extended Support Release of Firefox 60, also known as ESR. The ESR track was designed for companies that only want feature changes on an infrequent basis. So Firefox 60 ESR will only get security updates for the next 10-12 months, staying stable with the features of Firefox 60. Then ESR will jump to a new version, expected to be Firefox 68.

Migrating Bookmarks to Zotero

There are a number of tools you could use to manage notes and annotations on your bookmarks. This is one of them.

Zotero is an open source bibliographic/research tool for collecting references. Zotero knows how to read a Firefox HTML bookmarks file and will preserve the descriptions. You can keep your storage purely local, or you can optionally sync with the Zotero cloud.

This is a one-way trip: you can send new references to Zotero from within Firefox using a Zotero add-on, but you won't be able to read/edit bookmark descriptions from within Firefox.

The Zotero research tool is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux from https://www.zotero.org/

When you click an item in your bookmarks collection, Zotero displays the Title, URL, and "Abstract" which contains the imported Description. (Screenshot #1) Double-clicking the item will launch the page in the default browser.

Zotero also has an optional Firefox Connector webextension, which allow saving new pages to a Zotero collection (either under the bookmarks structure, or other folders the user created in Zotero). (Screenshot #2)

(I didn't look at cloud sync.)

Using a second program is less convenient than using Firefox features or a fully self-contained Firefox extension. However, it might suit your needs.

This add-on can't import the old data yet, so it's not an immediate solution, but hopefully in the near future it will be able to do that.

Thanks for that, it looks like a very helpful tool, and I shall be glad to use it. The problem for me remains, however, all my passwords and notes for my favourite sites are now lost ... the exported bookmarks to an HTML page is OK but difficult to navigate and read, I have hundreds and hundreds of bookmarks built-up over many many years. Firefox has made a dreadful error which must have affected thousands of users and needs to be resolved properly and immediately. Thanks for your help

Under "Forms & Passwords" => Saved Logins - are those sites listed
there  ? If so : click "Show Password"

Thank thank thank you !!! Whilst not totally solving the problem, it has enabled me to discover my passwords and allowed me to re-visit my bookmarked sites. I have never really explored all the options available to me under the 'options' tab......but I will now ! My very best regards to you

Install it and play with it, then form your own opinion about it.

IMO, it does show promise, but the UI is in the Sidebar which users will need to get used to. Developer options for extensions are very limited in WebExtensions vs the old Legacy extensions; just can't create an XUL dialog / preferences box of window as before. Not so good when first saving a new Bookmarks, but I think it will be easier to use with existing bookmarks. And as jscher2000 mentioned, there is no "Import" functionality for a users existing saved Descriptions data - yet - but it is on the developers enhancement list of to-do's.

It could be a perfect replacement shortly, but no cigar just yet.

No connection to Bookmarks at all. That experiment is better used to make a grocery list than to attempt to use it for "notes" like logins / passwords for websites.

First you messed up the bookmarks, then you messed up the RSS feeds and now you have messed up the links and tabs functions. I have had enough, after being a firefox user for many many years, and I am reluctantly migrating to Google

Tabs

Firefox recently gained the ability to multi-select tabs to perform operations on multiple tabs at once. On the plus side, this changed the "one or all" metaphor to "one or selected", allowing you more control. On the minus side, if you still want "all", you have to "select all" first.

Was it the Bookmark All Tabs that you miss, or the Reload All Tabs, or something else?

First it was.....No facility anymore to add descriptive comments in the 'properties' tab when right clicking a bookmark !! Then it was....No RSS feeds now supported !!

....and now.... no new tab will open when right clicking a link and selecting 'open link in new tab' without holding down 'ctrl' button !! with other hand !!!!!

Why ??? !

Why do you keep changing stuff that worked fine and were the reasons that Firefox built its popularity to become the very best browser available...why?

That's strange. Usually all three of these work the same way:

• right-click > Open Link in New Tab
• Ctrl+click the link
• midde-click the link with the mouse scroll wheel

However, there are some sites with tricky scripts that seem able to override one or more of the methods. If you are having this problem on one particular site, do you want to mention which one? If it happens everywhere, I wonder whether one of your add-ons is affecting how links open?

Hi It happens on all sites where I try to open a link in Firefox.... the linked tab flashes open then closes and disappears in a split second unless I hold the 'ctrl' button. It only happens in Firefox on my laptop, but not in other browsers. I shall disable my add-ons one at a time and see what happens...but if it's happening to me it must be happening to others Regards

Postscript.......the culprit seems to be 'Adaware Ad Block' I have disabled it and my linked tabs open again. Thank you so much......now all you have to do is restore the RSS feeds and the descriptive comments box in the 'properties' tab when right clicking a bookmark !! and you will get a gold star and a bag of nuts ! :-
