First of all, I've been having this problem in various forms for years. I stopped using Firefox years ago and switched to Pale Moon because of it, which was possibly a little better, but still had issues. I now use Waterfox and Tor Browser, and both have issues as well. So it seems to be an inherent issue with the browser itself. I had issues on XP years ago, then on 7 for years, and now on 10. Both 7 & 10 were/are 64-bit for both OS and browser. I use a lot of tabs, and currently have ~120 open in Firefox; however, currently only ~40 are actually loaded, so it's really not that many, yet the problem still exists.

Basically, one of two things happens, or both: after anywhere from less than a day to several days, the browser will slow down or it will crash. When it slows down, even small things take forever. For example, hovering over a tab will take a few to several seconds for the tab to change color indicating it's being hovered over (which also means clicking on a tab to switch to it takes as long), clicking checkboxes in my email is slow and unresponsive, and typing will freeze every few to several characters. When it gets real bad, the browser will say "Not Responding" and even fade out until it comes back, doing this very, very frequently, until it eventually just crashes.

It also doesn't seem like it could be a hardware issue, considering I've experienced this across multiple computers, and I just had Waterfox slow down with the "small" number of tabs open on my current computer (64GB RAM, Samsung 960 Evo) whereas I've had 500+ tabs open on my older computer (32GB RAM, 850 Evo). In fact, when it just happened, I checked the memory usage and it was using ~10GB, with only ~42% of my total memory being used, so it's not like the system was running low causing paging (not that that should make that much difference with my drive). And Windows and all other programs are fine whenever it happens; it's always just isolated to Firefox/Waterfox/Tor/Pale Moon. I did a garbage collection and a cycle collection, neither of which changed the memory usage or made any improvement, so I then did "minimize memory usage," which may have. I say may because the memory usage is now down to 8GB and Firefox is working well again, but I'm not sure if that's what did it. I have e10s set to 7 processes, which I understand makes it use more memory (though 8-10GB seems awfully high) but, as I said, I have more than enough. It almost seems like when the browsers reach a certain memory use, which seems to vary based on the browser and has nothing to do with the amount of memory available, they start having issues. Tor Browser seems to slow down and crash around 3-3.5GB, for example.

Also, it's doubtful it's add-ons, since I've used different ones over the years and with different browsers, I have almost all disabled in Waterfox, and I'm using even less in Tor, and only NoScript is common between them. I'm convinced the core of the browser is just not coded well enough to handle more than a small handful of tabs, but I'm hopeful somebody can provide some guidance to fix the issue, because otherwise I just don't know if I can stay with *fox, as I need stability in a browser.

after anywhere from less than a day to several days, the browser will slow down or it will crash

The normal first step would be to have you

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

But as you say, it takes all day . . . . . .

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP- in front of the numbers/letters, click it to submit them.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

Using your mouse, mark the most recent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box and paste them in.

Thanks for the reply, but safe mode isn't really an option, as Firefox just isn't usable in its default state with more than a couple dozen tabs, and considering the problem isn't terribly consistent, it could mean using it that way for possibly days, and that's just not feasible. Not to mention that, as I said, I've experienced this problem across multiple OS's, browsers, computers, and with different add-ons. I suspect the only reason more people don't experience it is because most people don't have very many tabs open. It really seems to me that Firefox just isn't designed to properly handle more than a moderate amount of tabs. I was hoping I could get around this with better and better hardware, or that newer versions of the browser would finally have fixed the problem, but neither has proven to be a solution.

As for about:crashes, both Waterfox and Tor report that as an invalid address. Only Firefox has it, so I'm guessing that's something that was added in Quantum. I do have a few crashes saved in Firefox, but I don't think they're related to this.

Waterfox, Tor, and Pale Moon are all based off of Firefox, and I have had the same problem with all four browsers. So I'm aware they have separate support, but the problem isn't isolated to any one or two of them, and it would be ridiculous to go to each separate one and post about it, because the proper answer there would be that the problem needs to be fixed at the source, which is Firefox. I could hope that it's fixed with Quantum, but I've been hoping with every update for the past several years that it would be fixed, not to mention I'm avoiding Quantum as long as possible. There's clearly something wrong with the browser at its core, and it appears to be related to memory management.

When the listed make changes to Firefox code to make their own browser the problem is with them.

Have you checked your ram with memtest86 ?

Is the problem related to multi-processor ? Multi-Processor Support : Go to the 3 Bar Menu then Options --> General --> Performance and untick everything. change the recommended size lower then see how it runs. Note: 1 = No Multiprocessor = slow again. Try 2 Restart Firefox after making these changes please. Note : Hardware Acceleration is for Video Card, Monitor to see if remain off or to turn back on.

Only Disable as last resort.

Multi-processor Can completely disable it this way in about:config : dom.ipc.processCount set to 1 browser.tabs.remote.autostart = false browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 = false

What is the age of your system components and has the motherboard drivers ever been updated, has it ever had it's bios flashed with a update to fix issues ?

So all those above should be checked as they all use ram, USB Drivers & Controllers the whole thing should be looked at and not just focused on Firefox.

Well, since nobody could bother to read and comprehend the fact that this issue has happened REGARDLESS OF BROWSER, COMPUTER, ADDONS, OR OTHER CONDITIONS, and instead wanted to insist it must be due to using a fork or addons or whatever (i.e. shift the blame, an attitude which is why issues like this still exist after years), I went ahead and did some browsing with FIREFOX, with NO addons and a fresh install/profile and, shocker, the problem STILL HAPPENED. I'm sure now people will suggest I reinstall Windows or use the latest version of Firefox, even though, as I've said, this has happened across multiple installs, multiple Windows versions, multiple computers, and years of updated versions and forks. Hopefully, people will stop trying to come up with excuses and recognize that there's a serious problem with Firefox, so progress can be made toward a solution. And I'm happy to help figure it out, by testing and offering information, such as crash reports, but I'm not going to continue wasting my time if people are going to just keep acting like the issue must be something basic and obvious, despite already being ruled out.

As I said previously, using Firefox without addons is just not feasible for me. If I was going to do that, I would just use a better browser like Brave or Vivaldi. I use Firefox *because* of the addons, and I require them. Having a few hundred tabs open with TabMixPlus, for example, is just an exercise in futility. Nonetheless, I needed to do something that would require opening well over 100 (and probably a few hundred) tabs, and wouldn't require me to go back to previous ones, so I decided to use the opportunity to test plain, vanilla Firefox (52.9.0). Normally, in doing what I did, I would close tabs as I finished with them, but I just left them open and kept creating new ones as I went, in order to simulate a normal browsing session for myself. The memory climbed much slower, because of the lack of e10s, so it took more tabs than it does in Watefox, but it was similar to what I experience with Tor Browser.

First, once the memory usage got to ~4GB (or at least that's where it was when I checked due to it starting to have problems, but it could have been there for a while before they began), it started slowing down, going unresponsive regularly. I kept using it like this, with it getting progressively worse. The first time I noticed a fairly major change in how bad it was, the memory was ~4.5-5GB, and the next time I noticed another major drop it was probably ~5.5GB. After a while (a few to several hours, don't remember exactly), it crashed, and I copied the first crash report that's pasted below and submitted the crash, referencing this post. I then closed Firefox and relaunched it, then proceeded to do more browsing. Despite the fact it doesn't load tabs until they're activated, and so all the tabs from the previous/crashed session, while open again, shouldn't have had an effect, it took much less time for the problem to start again, as if those tabs were adding to the problem. As it gradually got worse and worse, to the point of being a MASSIVE waste of time due to taking easily 10-20x longer to do things because of it, I kept going, because I wanted to get it to crash again, to generate another report. I spent several hours today doing what should have taken less than an hour because of this, so I really hope the report is informative and that it's *used.* For the last few hours, it was so bad that it would become completely unresponsive several times a minute, for several seconds at a time. Basically, it wouldn't respond for 5-10 seconds, give or take (and varying), then it would respond for anywhere from half a second to several seconds (though, especially in the last couple hours it was more like a few seconds max), then go unresponsive again. When unresponsive, I couldn't click on anything, switch tabs, type into it, scroll, or even bring the window into focus. If I clicked on it a couple times it would just go all white. Basically, just like any other program when it stops responding. And just like the other browsers all do. And while normally I would appreciate it holding in there, keeping itself from crashing, it was very frustrating and I spent hours hoping it would crash soon, because it was so unusable. By the time it finally did crash, the memory usage had climbed to ~9GB, possibly higher. I don't know if the type of content on the pages matters, but I did end up loading a few dozen plus tabs of YouTube videos just to try and help push it over the edge, because I couldn't afford to keep wasting so much time. It's possible it would have crashed overnight without doing so, or that loading as many tabs with basic web pages would have done the same thing; I don't know. But I figured I'd mention it in case anybody cares to actually test it out on their own instead of just assuming the problem is this or that and must be related somehow to me, to see if they can actually reproduce it.

Also, I have no problem doing this in the latest Firefox version, if it would help figure out the problem. I just don't want people trying to say using an older version is the reason, especially since ESR is still supported.

Oh, and yes, I tested my memory THOROUGHLY with memtest when I built my new system eight months ago, and drivers are up-to-date. But again, I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM FOR YEARS ON *MULTIPLE SYSTEMS.*l

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Secure websites. Is the problem still there?

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

Apparently ESR DOES have about:crashes, must be something removed from TBB for privacy reasons. So here's the links (the first one may not be applicable; also, there are four others from the past couple days, even though it only crashed twice during that period (the last two below), so I'm not sure what's up with those, and why they didn't, and won't, submit):

As for safe mode, that's definitely not feasible. I'm not going to spend several hours, or possibly even a few days, surfing the web with no protection. Not to mention I use my computer for a lot more than web browsing, and I can't just not be able to do anything for however long it takes to do that. It would be nice if, between the crash reports and maybe a more knowledgeable user or, better yet, a dev, trying to reproduce the problem, a solution could be found without requiring that. As much as I would like to get this issue fixed, I also need to get things done, and I would hope that Mozilla would also want to fix it and would, therefore, be willing to spend some time trying to reproduce it on their own. If it comes to it, and it's absolutely necessary to try in safe mode (again, I've had this same issue on XP, 7, and 10, on different computers, so I really cannot see how safe mode would help, unless it's caused by a conflict between Firefox and a Windows service that hasn't changed much in years), I could only do so in a VM, but that would present other issues.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes). If the problem goes away, that tells us one thing. If it does not, that tells us something else.

However, if it takes a week . . . . .

The first report is too old to be of use.

The others look like a windows problem. Perhaps the video drivers. I called for more help.

Problems have been reported with Win 10 and the video drivers.

more options

One week is too old? That seems very strange, but at least I don't think that one even applies to this. As for safe mode:

"Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration,"

I know this can be done via options in some (newer?) versions of Firefox. Isn't there a way to do it without requiring safe mode?

"resets some settings, and disables add-ons"

Neither of these should matter, since it's a fresh Firefox install with no changes to settings (well, one very minor one, but that's just an increase in timeout so I can actually get pages to load on my crappy connection) and no addons (except the built-in ones).

"However, if it takes a week . . . . ."

It varies. I got it to crash once within less than a day and again in another day or so. But I was doing A LOT, essentially simulating what typically takes days or weeks. I could probably get it to happen relatively quickly by loading a bunch of "heavy" pages (e.g. YouTube, Amazon, etc), but that would still be at least half a day, and probably a full day,, of not being able to do anything else and, more importantly, doing a bunch of browsing with no protection. I already don't like having done all the browsing I did without NoScript, uBlock Origin, etc, but at least I had virus protection, even if it is crappy Windows Defender.

If it turns out to be video drivers, and I can find some drivers that fix the issue, that would be great, but it seems to me a web browser shouldn't be so significantly affected by that, and, as I said before, I've had this issue with lots of setups, and therefore with lots of different drivers, not to mention different versions of them, so I still feel like there's more to it. Anyways, let me know if you need me to try anything or provide more info.

So this issue goes from computer to newer computer.

What is the common thing that you keep bringing along that is causing this issue ?

There is something your taking along each time as this should not be generational.

more options

Yes. I don't know if it's the same EXACT issue but, as I said, I had a very similar problem several years ago, which prompted me to switch to Pale Moon, because over the course of multiple updates to Firefox the issue never resolved. Pale Moon did it too (though it didn't seem as bad, possibly due to using older code, so maybe the problem was introduced or worsened around the time of the fork), and now, after using it for several years, I've switched to Waterfox, which also does it, as does TBB and Firefox. I don't remember now, but I think I was still using XP when it first started, though it may not have begun until I switched to 7, which I used for years and now I've been using 10 for the past several months or so. I've rebuilt my computer two or three times, so the only things shared are (possibly) my Blu-ray drive and some SATA cables. I've done extensive drive tests, which include cable tests, by the way, so it's extremely unlikely those could have anything to do with it, not to mention that I don't even know if any of them are still the same, and my current OS drive is an M.2. All of this is why I've been saying over and over that I find it very hard to believe this could be anything other than a problem in the code, as it's practically impossible it's something specific to me, aside from how I actually use the browser. While I know there are others that have lots of tabs open, most people don't have even close to 100, much less a few to several hundred. I just don't think the browser is coded properly to handle that load, and I suspect the only reason more people haven't reported an issue with it is because so few people use it heavily enough to cause it. I mean, how many people have it using ~10GB or memory, or even half that. And I think at least part of the problem is a memory leak, because it seems to creep up over time even when I'm not doing much or when I'm opening tabs but also closing tabs and keeping the number of them fairly static (I realize it's not just about the number, but also the content, but even keeping that in mind it just seems like I often get memory creep more than I should).

Well we are getting no closer to a solution so I think maybe you should decide : If you have a bug, file a bug report. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ Bug Writing Guidelines : https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/QA/Bug_writing_guidelines
