At present you have all that the Right Click of Mouse on Tabs offer. If set up Preview Tabs in Options -->Tabs --> Show tab previews in the Windows taskbar you can mouse over the Firefox Icon in Windows10 Taskbar and see tabs until you have too many to figure it out (some have 100's open)

You can also copy/paste, tabs, tab manager, and a bunch more you can thing of into the Search Bar in this URL and come up with Extensions that can do stuff, more being added as people make them. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/extensions/

Do you mean when you clicked on the current tab, it used to close the tab and Firefox then would show the previous one? I think that might have been a feature of an add-on...

You can close a tab using any of these methods:

• "middle-click" it with the mouse scroll wheel
• click the x button (if the tab's not too small or pinned)
• right-click > Close Tab
• (current tab only) press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+w

When you have enough tabs to make the tab bar scrollable, while your mouse pointer is over any tab, scrolling the mouse wheel should work like sliding an invisible scroll bar thumb from the left end to the right end, or back again. That IS a built-in feature.

It may have been an add-in, but no, I do not want to close the tab, all I want to do is switch from one tab to the other. Formally when I left clicked on a tab, it would toggle between that tab & the last one selected so it was very easy to work between two open tabs, click once & it switches to the last active tab, click again, without even moving the mouse, & you're back to the the tab where the mouse is. This was VERY convenient if many tabs are open & the previous tab is hidden down the line. As it is now, the best way I can figure is to have the two tabs open in two different browsers, not the best solution.

I suspect it was Tab Mix Plus. But whatever it was, I don't think extensions can currently change what happens when you left-click a tab. It could be added to the right-click context menu, which is one extra step, or it could be made a toolbar button ("Switch to Previous Tab").

But as to how to keep track of your tab switching habits, I've only seen one example so far, which is: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/active-tab-history/

After you install that, it starts building a list of the unique ID of each tab you touch, so you can use Alt+, to go back through the history, and Alt+. to go forward. Maybe the author would be interested in adding a menu item or button to it?

Thanks for your suggestion. It probably was Tab Mix Plus now that you mention it. But it did function exactly as I described, one left click switched between the two last active tabs. Very handy for research. Too bad it's not a standard function. Unfortunately Tab Mix Plus no longer works.

Well, I somehow managed to create an extension for you to test out. You have to click a toolbar button instead of the tab. If it would be useful, it could be added to the tab right-click menu (but not tonight...).

It works! Thanks for your quick work!!! Not quite as convenient as clicking on the tab was, but I could get used to it. Just being able to click on the tab was a great feature, without having to move the mouse. Adding it to the right-click menu would be a step backward IMHO as it would require more mouse work. It's solved, but not quite ideal. Should I mark it solved? I'd prefer to have it the way it was. I suppose marking it solved means no-one else will look at it, right?

Well, no one here in support can change Firefox itself, only settings and add-ons, so we've probably taken you as far you can get on a support forum. It's unclear if or when Firefox will let extension developers capture clicks on tabs.

It turns out there already was an extension with a one-click toolbar button. It didn't come up when I was searching before. In the screenshot for that one, the button was moved to the tab bar. Not sure if that's more convenient than the main toolbar; you can use Customize to move buttons around.

I can't decide whether I'm sad or happy I didn't find that. I learned a lot spending my weekend on this project, but I could have spent my weekend away from the keyboard. ;-)

I also saw a possible solution for people who like keyboard shortcuts, you can check a box on the Options page to switch the Ctrl+Tab shortcut from going next, next, next in order on the tabs bar to previous, previous, previous in the order that you accessed the tabs.

If you want to try that:

• Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
• Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
• Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
• Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

Scroll down to the Tabs section and check the box for "Ctrl+Tab cycles through tabs in recently used order".
