since when did firefox processes on linux start showing up as 'We' in top?

This forum supports desktop Firefox on Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux

Firefox has had multi process for a while now. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Electrolysis https://developer.mozilla.org/Firefox/Multiprocess_Firefox

If you prefer to not have multprocess you can try toggling browser.tabs.remote.autostart to false in about:config
