Why is Firefox crashing every hour or so on a fresh win10 install?

I finally got around to upgrading to windows 10, but it's starting to feel like a downgrade. I have been trying to track down the cause of these crashes over the last few days, as well as the cause of a bluescreen involving directx. I only mention that in case the two problems are related.

Crashes occur seemingly at random.

On top of messing with extensions and trying to recreate the problem, I have tried running in safe mode, and still encounter these random crashes. I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for in these crash reports, so I have run out of ideas. Hopefully someone who knows more than I do can help.

Chosen solution

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Options/Preferences -> Advanced -> General -> Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

Did these crashes start when you upgraded to Firefox 54?

Edit: Ran for 5 hours of light use without crashing once, looks like it was hardware acceleration.

I am currently running without hardware acceleration, I will report back whether that works for me. Thank you for helping, cor-el and FredMcD! I'm running every sort of 'stress test' I can now. I sort of have to wait and see.

The driver FredMcD linked is meant for windows 7, not windows 10. Is that my current detected driver or a link to a new one? According to Crimson, my current version is the newest it has, 17.10.1731-17042412-313745C-CrimsonReLive. This was my driver for 3 of the crashes listed above, before that I was trying a different graphics card. I'll just list that whole history below in case it is useful to you.

In regards to the Firefox 54 question, the crashes started when I upgraded my OS. I have a feeling it has something to do with software changes there. Firefox has functioned perfectly for me on Windows 7 for years, and on version 54 since it came out. Over the last week I have:

Backed up Windows 7 and uninstalled

Upgraded my motherboard, ram, and CPU

Upgraded to Windows 8.1 Enterprise Trial Edition, figured out that was the wrong ISO. Didn't even use it for more than 15 minutes.

Formatted

Upgraded to Windows 8.1 Enterprise Full, Firefox 54 crashed as well as encountering bluescreens. Tried fixing them with no luck. I unfortunately don't have those crash reports.

Formatted

Upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, Firefox 54 Crashes, anything that uses DirectX (and any game I have tested, all of which worked on windows 7) will function normally for 10 - 15 minutes and then crash, looks like anything based on chromium, such as discord, will quietly crash every hour or so. Also completely different bluescreens from the win8.1 ones started popping up.

Windows installed the newest drivers for my card, so I tried older ones, no luck. I tried disabling windows' control over graphics drivers in order to reinstall the newest ones manually, no luck there either.

Installed a different graphics setup. GTX660 -> R9 380. Fully upgraded the drivers on that too. My crash listed under Safe Mode and my top two crashes listed above under Other Crashes are from after doing this.

Firefox still crashes just as often, i have only bluescreened once, and chromium apps haven't crashed yet. However all of those game and DX crashes happen more often, I get about 5 minutes in between. Games are hit or miss, but most crash more often. This is a complete mystery to me.
