I am unable to (effectively?) install extensions. I have tried online suggestions without success.

Posted

Firefox was creeping after I had disabled all addons. So I tried Refresh, having been assuered that a number of files, including Bookmarks, would be preserved. I have spent at least an hour trying to re-install some extensions. I have tried online suggestions without success. I have made four attempts to install Classic theme restorer. I have gotten one pannel which suggests that it is installed. but I it does not appear to be operative. I still see the new GUI. This is a substantial handicap, as I am not very familiar with the new GUI.

As far as I can tell, two other extenmsions have not been installed. And I have not been able to recover my bookmarks. Numerous other changes have occurred, including an invasion of Yahoo and Google products. I seem to have a number of plugins installed which I have neither re-installed nor re-acitvated

I am running Windows 7, with Firefox 45

Question owner

Thank you very much for your help.

For the second time a reply I have written has vanished. I am now typing this for the third time, as an email, to copy it to this site when completed.

I followed your instructions through

Delete the extensions.* files (e.g. extensions.json, extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini), and then going to

https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Profiles

Your first link repeatedly timed out before loading. I had previously found the second link, and read/tried the apparently relevant topics without solving my problem. (I did not post the question until I had spent considerable time trying and failing to fix it myself.)

According to Application Basics, all of the extensions I have tried to install are "Installed...True". Lightbeam and Ghostery are now operational. Classic theme restorer is not. I have never seen it since Refreshing. I am still struggling with the (relatively) new GUI. I was fortunate to learn about Version 29 before installing it, and did not until Classic theme restorer was available to fix it. Getting Classic theme restorer operational would greatly enhance my ability to operate Firefox.

Also, Restoring Firefox seems to have lost my Bookmark list, now replaced by something else of little use to me. Loss of my own Bookmark list would be disastrous.

Refreshing Firefox has been a disaster for me. Since then I have worked on nearly nothing else, for several hours, trying to recover the use of the browser.

If you can help me to get Classic theme restorer operational, and recover my own Bookmarks, I will be very grateful

First, let's try to find your data.

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox?

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recovering-important-data-from-an-old-profile

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

If the above does not help,

To open the Bookmarks Manager, press the Alt or F10 key bring up the tool bar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control>(Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

Once the window is open, at the top of the page, press the button labeled Import and Backup. Select Restore. From the list, pick the file you want and click it.

Thank you very much for sticking with me. I 'm afraid that you find this as frustrating as I do. I greatly appreciate your help.

Could you take remote control of my computer and see what is happening in real time? I think this could be much faster than going back and forth.

No, I don't see Old Firefox on my desktop. Searching All Programs did not find it.

Your first link tells me that some of the information I want is in files with extensions .json and .sqlite. However you previously instructed me to

"Delete the extensions.* files (e.g. extensions.json, extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry."

I did so. It appears that I still have these files in Recycling, but I don't know how to use them.

I have previously found and gone through your second link (twice) without success.

"To open the Bookmarks Manager, press the Alt or F10 key bring up the tool bar, and select Bookmarks."

Pressing Alt did nothing I noticed. Pressing F10 produced a flashing toolbar from the Classic GUI at the top of the page. Clicking the flashing Bookmarks button did nothing which I noticed.

I don't understand

"Hot key is <Control>(Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B."

I attempted to try to do this while holding F10, but pressing F10 no longer shows the flashing toolbar. Why does F10 no longer do what it did two minutes ago?

BTW, I previously mentioned a page

"Restore bookmarks from backup..."

Which instructs me to

"Click the Bookmarks button [icon I don't recognise] and select Show All Bookmarks to open the Library window."

Do you know where might I find that button?

Again, thank you fore sticking with me on this.

PS

I have two distinct problems:

Activating Classic theme restorer, which seems to be "Installed...True", but is not functioning; which is more urgent than

Recovering bookmarks, which is no less important, but less urgent.

The F10 is not part of the hotkey, press Only the keys listed.

I'm starting to think you may have a deeper problem than I thought. What I want you to do is a full, clean install of Firefox. Please follow these instructions;

Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link} Save the file. Then;

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

Do Not remove the profiles folder.

Look for, and rename any Firefox program folders by adding .old to them.

After rebooting then run the installer. If all goes well, remove the OLD program folders when you are done. Again leave your Profiles alone.

Do you see any bookmark backups in the bookmarkbackups folder or in the Bookmarks Manager (Library)?

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item-count>_<hash>.jsonlz4
  • Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Restore

You can also try to rename or delete the prefs.js file to reset all prefs.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

1) When I tried to download FF, I got Firefox Setup Stub 45.0.2, and saved and ran it. I then proceded to download FF, but was told that FF would "launch" as soon as the download was complete.

Does "launch" mean Run? Or would I stilll be able to Save it and then follow your other instructions before Running the new version?

I'm sorry to be so dumb. I've been using computers since I got DOS on four or five 5" floppies. I have continued to use PCs without too much difficulty, getting help when I needed it, without learning enough to confidently follow your instructions. Nor is my 72 year old mind as sharp as it once was. Please be patient.

2) Bookmarkbackups in my Profile folder is just a list of pdf files. Trying to follow your other suggestions, I still have not been able to find my bookmark list just before Refreshing FF.

Yeah, that good old days where you had an OS on a few 5¼ inch (or later 3½) floppies (lets skip the 8 inch era)

The backups in the bookmarkbackups folder should be files with a .jsonlz4 file extension and that are definitely not PDF files. If you see that in Windows Explorer then you may have a corrupted file association. Note that the only way to deal with such a compressed .jsonlz4 is to restore this backup in the Bookmarks Manager (Library).

I've never used stub installers on Window, so I don't know if they have a checkbox like you have when you do a custom install of the full version whether to start (launch) Firefox after the installation has finished. I would assume that you can disable this automatic startup in case you would want to use the Profile Manager to create a dedicated profile for a specific version.

Question owner

Thank you for chipping in.

I have already found your instruction. It begins with "Click the Bookmarks button [icon I don't recognise]". I have never seen this bookmarks button; where is it? I have asked previous helpers this question, but so far none has answered it. I can't click a button I can't find. If you can direct me to this button I think that would likely solve the bookmarks problem.

Which leaves the other big problem. I did not install FF 29 until Classic theme restorer was published to fix it. I have jusat enough experience with the new GUI to know that I greatly prefer the old one. So I am seriously handicapped without Classic tr. While Classic theme restorer is listed as "Installed...true", it is not operational. I have never seen it since Refreshing FF. Do you know how an "Installed...true" addon (or extension?) can be non-operative? Or more specifically, how to make it operate.

I hope you will be able to help me with bookmarks at least, and hopefully make Classic tr work as well.

This did it! Thank you!

I now have my bookmarks back. However I am still struggling with the (relatively) new FF GUI. I tried to install Classic theme restorer. According to my Toubleshooting page, it is "Installed...V1.5.0...Enabled: true." But it is not operatiive. I am stlll seeing the new GUI, which I find much more difficult to operate. Numerous functions which are in plain sight on the Classic GUI are hidden on the new GUI; sometimes I can figure out how to get to a function I want, sometimes not. At best the new GUI substantially slows me down; at worst I can't figure out how to do something which is obvious on the Classic GUI. Can anyone help me to get Classic theme restorer operational?

I found Classic Toolbar Buttons Version History almost by accident, which which allows me to "Add to Firefox". Hoping Classic Toolbar Buttons was another name for Classic theme restorer I tried clicking this and rebooting, to see if that might get Classic Toolbar Buttons operational. No luck.

As with Classic theme restorer, it too is now shown as installed (I think)...V 1.5.0...Enabled: true. But I do not see any classic buttons.

Does anyone understand how an apparently installed and enabled extention can not function?

Usually when you install CTR there are drastic changes rolling back the appearance of Firefox by a couple of years. In particular, I think you normally get an orange button with the word Firefox in the upper left corner providing access to the compact menus introduced in Firefox 4.

Maybe it would be more helpful to see the classic menu bar? To turn different bars on and off, you can use one of these methods to show the toolbar list and select the desired bars there:

In years past I have operated FF with little difficulty. Over the past few years FF has become MUCH more complex. I do not find the new complex FF intuitive. How would I have guessed my way to this solution? Perhaps it is obvious to a geek, but it is not to me. This brings FF back to where I want it. Thank you again for teling me how to fix this problem.

Did you open the CTR Options/Preferences, either via the about:addons page or via the Tools menu. Not all items are enabled by default and you will have go to the CTR Options to customize your desired appearance.

See the screenshots:

  • You can check out the settings of the CTR extension via its Options/Preferences button on the "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" page.
  • You can find extra toolbar buttons and more toolbar settings in Customize (3-bar Firefox menu button > Customize)

I sincerely thank all who have helped me restore FF after Refreshing it. I was completely stuck without your help.

My principal dissatisfaction FF is the, to me, near worthlessnes of the electronic support; I have found it endlessly frustrating when I have attempted to use it. Which I did for a few hours before posting my question. I made a serious effort to solve the problem myself, and got nowhere. If the personal support I have received with this problem were generally available my enthusiasm for FF would soar.

Does anyone care about the opacity of FF electronic support to non-geeks? If so, could any of you refer me somewhere I could detail some difficulties I have had with it? I could describe a few problems very explicitly, which I hope might facilitate fixing the problems.

Thank you all for your help
