Firefox was very slow, constantly showing colour wheel, so tried to use 'Restore Firefox', 'New profile' etc., must have done damage with result that now I have a new Firefox page with no bookmarks, or links, and cannot see how to restore the old Firefox, to go back to what it was before I started messing about.

If you mean you used the "Refresh Firefox" feature, you can read info about this including how to manually copy important files containing e.g. bookmarks from your old profile in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Another way is to (temporarily) add the -P option to your existing startup shortcut (see this article for info) in order to start Firefox with its Profile Manager, so you will likely have the choice of starting Firefox with the new as well as the old profile that you can select.
