With no warning, Firefox is asking me if I want to import things from internet explorer (which I do not use) and then deleting the saved bookmarks and passwords I had saved in Firefox. This is the second time it happened, never had this issue before. Recently upgraded to Windows 10. Very very frustrating. If it happens again I am going to do away with Firefox.....

Sounds that there is a problem with the profiles.ini file that registers the profiles. When this file is missing then you get the import migration wizard.

You can use one of these to make Firefox create a new default profile or reuse an existing profile:

  • Delete the profiles.ini file to force Firefox to create a new default profile
  • Use the Profile Manager to create a new profile
If you still have an existing profile then click "Choose Folder" in the PM and select the location of a lost profile and recover this profile.

You should find the profiles.ini file in this hidden location:

  • Windows: %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\
    *C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\

You can check if there are still profiles present.

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) to see if that makes the profiles.ini file stay in case security software is causing issues.
