On some websites I get odd symbols and characters instead of the URL in the address bar

That is likely a problem with the RSS Icon 1.0.6 extension.

See this support article. How do I create a screenshot of my problem? It is best to use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed a maximum file size of 1 MB.

Then use the Browse .... button below the Post a Reply text box to upload the screenshot.

An incompatible add-on can cause that or the wrong mix of add-ons.

Try the Firefox Safe Mode, which is a troubleshooting mode.

My guess is that Colorful Tabs might be the cause.

That is likely a problem with the RSS Icon 1.0.6 extension.

@cor-el Many thanks - this seems to have done the trick.....I removed the RSS Icon extension and all is well.

You're welcome.

It is a know issue with extensions that add an RSS button to the location/address bar. You can find a Feed button that is part of Firefox in the Customize palette.
