Hi there, I have just had to upgrade and get a new Pc and it has windows 8.1 which is awful. I only like to use firefox as my browser. I have tried to install it but it won't work. I cannot find any up to date information on the web as to whether firefox can be installed with Windows 8.1 I have a 64 bit operating system. Is there a way to do this? Or if not does anyone know if it will be available soon, or i'll have to use chrome which i don't like as much. I don't have much technical knowledge to do complicated things. I wonder if it works well on Windows 8 if i try and downgrade..... Not sure i know how to do that/ Any help be appreciated. thanks

Hi Rhian, Sorry for any confusion! It's good news: Firefox should work flawlessly on your Windows 8.1 computer. :) It sounds like you've had some trouble downloading Firefox, so please try using this page: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ Just click the relevant link to download Firefox for Windows in your language. The links on this page use a slightly different method to the usual link, so it should bypass the problem you've had. I hope this helps. Don't hesitate to ask us if you need any further help. Happy Firefoxing! Jayelbe

thanks for the reply but that doesn't answer the question as i see from the system requirements that 8.1 isn't listed....?!

For the Windows part it mentions the minimum for each as for example Windows XP with Service Pack 2 is the minimum as Firefox 13.0 and newer will not work on Windows XP or XP SP1.

So for Windows 8 it means all Windows 8.

Programs that work with Windows 8 usually work with Windows 8.1, too.

sorry i don't understand any of the answers above! I have 8.1 and i have tried to download firefox - the latest version but it will not download. I don't know why and I don't understand from the answers above if it is because it is not compatible with Windows 8.1 or if it is for another reason. I am not a pc expert; i am a member of the public who has been using firefox for the last 7 years on vista and it has worked perfectly. Can someone explain the answer to me in very plain english?! thank you !

As I said what is listed is the minimum needed for each Windows OS as some have Service Packs. Hypothetically say it listed 8.2 as the minimum instead of 8.0 then that version of Firefox would not work on 8.0 or 8.1

The only Windows 8 version that Firefox for desktop does not work on is the Windows RT normally used on some tablets.

I see here in the comments that everyone seems to be talking about Firefox 34. I know that there is a version 38, which I have as my default browser, on my old, not used as much, Windows 7 PC.

Is there some reason that Firefox 38 cannot be downloaded on to a Windows 8.1 laptop? I just bought a new laptop with factory installed Windows 8.1...NOT the RT version. Personally, from what I've experienced withy 8.1...I like it. The touchpad is VERY SENSITIVE, and most of the time, TWO fingertips are needed to scroll or move the mouse pointer, but this Windows version is pretty nice, IMHO.

Can I install Firefox 38 on a Windows 8.1 laptop, without any issues? Or must I install the version 34?

No, there is no reason you cannot use Firefox 38.0.5 on Windows 8.1.

Normally before it was Windows version and the Service Pack version for it (like with Windows XP, Vista, 7). With Windows 8 they used 8.1 to refer to as a update for Windows 8.

Get the full setup for Windows from www.mozilla.org/firefox/all as the stub installer is served on www.mozilla.org and some antivirus clients still gives false positives on the stub.

Note that Firefox 39.0 is scheduled for Release on Tuesday June 30.

The reason for old Firefox 34 being mentioned is because this thread was started back on January 1st, 2015. If you had not bumped this thread it would have been auto locked and archived in oh a week.

Thanks for the info, James, but I have another question. Could you please clarify the second paragraph in your post.

I'm not even remotely close to a tekkie, and I don't quite understand; ...as the stub installer is served on...and some antivirus clients still gives false positives on the stub. Exactly what does that mean? And yes, I'm computer illiterate.

Thank you very much for the quick reply, and the advice. I am grateful.

For Windows Mozilla serves a small stub installer on mozilla.org which is a online installer for Firefox. The full setup file that you can get on www.mozilla.org/firefox/all does not need a internet connection to install Firefox.

Even though the newer stub installer has existed since Firefox 18.0 some antivirus clients occasionally still flag it for some reason instead of those antivirus companies fixing it.
