How do I restore the new tab pins from older versions of firefox?

I recently updated my Firefox version to V.33 and I really dislike the layout of the suggested or "pinned" websites. The previous version I used had only three "pins" to a row, with three columns, giving me a total of 9 "pinned" sites. This new update gives me way more options, but they're about a quarter of the size of the ones used in the previous Firefox version I had, making it very hard for someone (such as myself) who has bad eyesight to select the correct "pin". I really enjoy this browser but this is severely affecting the way I use it and I would just like to go back to the things I'm used to.

If anyone has any knowledge on how to revert just this one feature I'd be extremely greatful if you could share it.

Thanks.

Chosen solution

This is on the new tab page (Ctrl+t)? Those pages are from your history unless you have pinned your own pages there.

Firefox 33 now tries to get up to 5 thumbnails across. You can reduce the number of thumbnails per row back to 3 by changing a setting "under the covers", but I'm not sure it will help because thumbnail size also depends on the available height:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste newtab and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.newtabpage.columns preference and change it from 5 to 3, then OK your change.

As an alternative, does it help to zoom the page (hold down Ctrl and tap the + key)?

Thank you very much, it did help a bit with the size but zooming in doesn't seem permanent. Either way I'm very grateful for the help!

Some other users also said the zooming was not remembered on the next new tab. I'm not sure why that is happening. You could consider using an add-on if you get tired of the zooming. See: New tab has multiple thumbnails.

You can try to set the browser.newtab.preload pref to false on the about:config page to see if that helps to remember the page zoom.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.
