It's very odd. Normally moving an email, say from the Inbox to the relevant year's archive, takes "no time at all".

Which is true for all the mailboxes shown on the attached screenshot, EXCEPT for the four at the bottom. Moving even one message from Inbox to Yiddish can take ten seconds or longer (with the dreaded "Not Responding" occasionally). Moving something in the opposite direction is also screwy, only from those four.

I had thought that it was because they're rather large. This first started when there were just Yiddish and MSW, and I split off most of the earlier years into the archives shown. To no avail.

It's only an annoyance, but I'm puzzled about how such a thing could happen.

Also very slow tagging or untagging a message just in those mailboxes.

Hello David and thank you for your prompt answer. The situation between my mails ubfortunately remain the same. Nothwithstanding my re-installation of Thunderbird. I run a "HP ProDesk 200 GS MT" PC with Windows 11 and full virus protection etc. I clean my PC and run troubleshooting regularly. Never any problem. And now: Thunderbird opens at command and can be moved on my screen with minutes of delay. I can select mail address book and calender but I can not use them. Incoming ermails show on the screen but I can noy open them. If a drag an incoming mail to my Explorer app, then Explorer gets blocked and I must restart my PC. I can not open the Send Mail function. I can not open older mails on the Expolrer. Thus I am completedly stuck. Can you fix this problem? In case you can not assist me, I will load the Outlook program to get going. I have a completely vanilla install of TB fully up to date as of this writing [it is version = 156.0.1 (aarch64) and I checked for updates], no extensions, no proxy, on a new OSX 27.0 (Golden Gate) computer and even when idling it is using substantial resources. The only thing even remotely non-basic is their is the Proton Mail Bridge to connect to Proton Mail for one of the linked email accounts, but that is its own little program with its own threads and takes almost no system resources even when sending or receiving mail (which is not happening currently.) Look at the attached screen shot.

In the screen shot I have left Thunderbird to idle for about an hour. No new mail in that time and other then clicking on or off the window to bring it to the fore I have not interacted with the program at all myself. Meanwhile Thunderbird and its Thunderbird GPU Helper are using substantial amounts of the CPU and GPU, have a combine total of 86 threads (more then any two other things running except the kernal tasks) and are hogging ram (not depicted).

Meanwhile among a few other applications (Apple Music, OfficeLibre, etc...) I also have Brave Browser opened in the background running with two windows and a total of 8 tabs wherein Brave is actively downloading GB of data from MEGA as well as performing other admittedly lighter tasks. Even when doing all this, Brave barely registers on computer resources compared to Thunderbird and Thunderbird GPU Helper when they are just idling.

Is this all proton mail's fault with the Proton Mail Bridge? If not is there anything I can do to quell the hunger for computer resources of this voracious beast of an email client that is TB and uses resources as if it were a video game even when idling?

I'm using Thunderbird 115.18.0 and just today it's behaving bizarrely. Crashed twice for no reason, and emails are taking "forever" to delete -- normally they delete immediately (unless they have an enormous attachment), but today I have to wait about 4 seconds for one short text only email to delete. Compacted folders, and made no difference.

Any ideas? Anything I can do to return to my normal I love Thunderbird condition?

Thanks.

I have had Thunderbird from the time I acquired my Mac computer. This week it started to do something new. After a restart I opened Thunderbird. A box came up that says across the top System Integration. The cursor balloons, and hasn't stopped for the time I powered the computer, as least fifteen minutes. You know how the program icons are in a dock across the bottom. With other browsers open, hitting the Thunderbird icon doesn't bring its window into the forefront. This needs either a reset, or possibly a backup first. Is there a quicker way to fix this? Thanks in advance. I am not using a VPN; but I also have Thunderbird on my Windows 11. You might have seen a more recent thread on that installation. I included a screenshot. It was easier here to do that than on the Windows 11. On the Mac, I just had to use Activity Monitor to close out of Thunderbird in order to get its version.

Sending email has gotten very slow even for text messages. This started happening a few weeks ago & I didn’t think much about it. But something is not right.

I hit send & the little status window just sits there “Status: Sending Message”. The Progress bar shows all blue as if the email has been sent. But the screen just sits there.

This is on 3 different profiles where I have deleted trash & compacted folders.

If I login to the AT&T website & send messages they go through in a flash. Just like they used to do with Thunderbird.

I'm presuming the issue is with Thunderbird (vers 91.13.1). However I have not changed anything.

What could be affecting multiple profiles? Any suggestions how to fix this? Thanks

This post is more for posterity than asking for a solution because all similar topics ended up being Avast antivirus interfering or something less nefarious.

In my case eM client started having this problem first, then I switched to TB, but the same issue here. Of all places, the best clue was found on [[Linux mint|https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=213352]] forums. It was a permission problem. Right click on C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird -> properties -> security. I did two things and not sure which one did it, but they pretty much achieve the same. ...

The Users group in the list only had read permissions so I gave it full access to the folder and checked the option to set the same permission changes to all subfolders. I also added my own personal user to that list and gave that full permissions. Oh yeah, also changed owner to myself from whatever default windows group was there before.

Now, do I know the full repercussions of doing this? No. Pretty sure this just created a security hole inside my C drive, but... I don't really care at this point. If I had to fix this again, a solution might be to instruct TB to store the the email files somewhere else rather than where it is installed itself (somewhere less locked down than Program Files).

T-Bird is Freezing (Hang?) from start to freeze was 5 minutes and a few seconds. Have turned off hardware acceleration and now it freezes at just under 5 minutes. Have put on updates. Currently 153.0.1esr (64-bit). I have captured profile, and re-installed and picked up the profile. Still freezes. Turned off AV. Still freezes. I have compressed and "repaired" all folders. Still Freezes. I forced folders to get rid of anything older than 30 days. Still freezes.

I have been running the task manager, and T-Bird in frozen state is only using 4.3% of CPU at most. I do not see any slowdowns for any other program. So this is not a CPU constrained problem. And it certainly is not memory constrained.

All this started within the past month and I think it was after I put on an ESR update (don't remember which one).

I can kill T-Bird and start it and it will get mail if any, and will function for about 5 minutes and then freezes (or hangs). The system is set to fetch mail on start up and then every 27 minutes. I am not using Account hub (and don't know what it does).

One oddity -- This is a W11 Home system, and Mozilla keeps saying it is a W10 system. Could this be the problem? Wife is running a lesser laptop. It is also running T-Bird, but her O/S is a W11 Pro and she is not having this problem.

What do you suggest?

Do I need to perform a performance diagnostic? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiling-thunderbird-performance

Do I need to follow all the steps listed on https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems#Diagnosis_Steps, or can I skip some of them?

I am using Linux Mint Cinnamon 21.3 and Thunderbird POP3 email. I have 10 email accounts.

What I have noticed is the Thunderbird 128 series startup email check and/or "get all messages" is quite slow compared to previous versions.

Thunderbird 102.15.1 took only 4 seconds to check 10 email accounts, Thunderbird 115.18.0 took 5 seconds, but Thunderbird 128 and 136 series takes 15 seconds. All of these have used the same user profiles.

There is no antivirus software active. All messages are deleted from all accounts. No messages to download and checking for messages is still slow.

I have tried the Betterbird 128 series, a fork of Thunderbird, and it too behaves the same. Betterbird 115 series work fine, just like the Thunderbird 115 series.

Is this slowness in the 128 and 136 series by design?

Every time I shut down my Windows 11 PC (25H2, x86-64), it gets stuck and states "This app is preventing shutdown", listing Thunderbird as the application that is the cause for the hold. If I don't react to this and force close Thunderbird at this point, my PC does not shut down. (Annoying if I hit "shut down" and walk away expecting the shutdown to complete.)

If I close Thunderbird before shutting down, Windows proceeds correctly.

How can I diagnose why Thunderbird seems to hold Windows active?

I recently moved from macos to linux and noticed that Thunderbird always reloads one account on startup -- by that I mean that, when I open TB, three out of four accounts display immediately, but the fourth one takes a moment, and then all its folders start appearing in the left-hand-side column. I had a look around and saw something about the .msf file being broken, with a solution being to delete it and let it be rebuilt. I headed to my profile folder but I now see that, in the ImapMail folder, the three accounts that appear immediately have their respective folders and .msf file, but not the account that reloads every time. I tried clicking on "repair" on the (unified) inbox, I tried checking the settings, but am not seeing anything that helps. Any ideas?

Hi all,

I've been using Thunderbird for eons but yesterday morning it started freezing up constantly.

It freezes up ("Thunderbird is not responding") every time new emails are received or any time I take any action while the Inbox folder is open. So, if I delete an email it freezes for a few minutes. If I do anything pretty much, it freezes up for a few minutes. Then it comes back and I can do another action, and it freezes again. This only seems to be happening when I have the Inbox open - if I go to other folders it seems to function normally.

Things I've tried without success: - Troubleshooting mode - Adding exceptions for my profile folders to Windows Defender - Compressing Inbox (and Trash and Junk) - Repairing the Inbox index

This doesn't appear to be a memory issue - right now, memory use for my entire system seems to be hovering at just over 50%. But Thunderbird is still freezing.

My Inbox folder is very large, but it's never been an issue before and nothing significant was added yesterday when it started failing.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks

I have 2 Windows 11 laptops running Thunderbird. Retrieval of POP3 account email takes 10 times longer on Windows 11 as compared with Windows 7. I have 13 different email accounts. If there is nothing new to download, my windows 7 computer takes 5 seconds to check all account. Windows 11 takes 50 seconds for the same task... clunking along very much slower. I have tried many approaches to tracking down the cause of the slowness. Antivirus software (Norton 360) and various Thunderbird and system settings. Nothing makes any noticeable difference. I'm at a loss for what to try or even to finding anyone discussing the same issue. I have been using Thunderbird on at least 4 windows 7 pcs with no such issue. Both my windows laptops have the same clunky slowness. I want to move to windows 11, but this is holding me back. Is this just inherent to Windows 11? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
