When I search in Google, Firefox hangs/delays for several seconds

When I open up Firefox, I have Google as my default homepage. When I type in a search term, for instance, Reddit, it will type the R-e-d-d, then freezes and stops working for several seconds, then it will allow me to type again. It is minor, but quite annoying. I've read some articles and tried suggested changes in about:config but no luck. I am using Windows 8.1

Huge fan of Firefox but this really slows down my browsing experience.
