Hi, can you describe what you are trying to do in your Firefox? Here is my understanding of how it works now:

When you open the Bookmarks Sidebar in a window:

(1) Other existing windows are not affected (2) Any new window you launch from that window also should have the sidebar open

Did you want to change that in some way?

hi, j. thanks for not being scared away...description of situation. i usually work with 10-15 browser windows open, each with a sidebar for bookmarks, not the toolbar. each window - on the way to st. ive's - has varying numbers of open tabs. firefox rebooted perfectly and it's so useful, so thank an engineer for me. however ... rebooting does not restore exactly the bookmark sidebars as per each window. is it possible to tweak ? if i open a new window, the bookmark sidebar appears as my basic bookmarks folders list. but i would prefer if i could train the fox to open a new window in a particular bookmark sidebar folder. the bar won't close for hours, so we can take as much time as we want. (kiidding) i have a lot of bookmarks in a lot of folders and use different folders in different windows regularly, so i'm just being lazy, but i had to ask just in case.

Hi Elise, I don't normally keep the bar open, so I've never considered what might be selected in the sidebar at startup.

I suspect Firefox only stores the last change to the open/closed folders, since that is what I see when I launch a new window during my session. So my guess is that is what you would see at startup. Is that your experience?

Maybe someone else who uses the sidebar more often will have a suggestion.

Hi Elise, I use between 15 and 20 windows -- if I get more than a few tabs for a project, I move them to a new window. I created a new profile for testing:

Test #1 (no session restore, first attached screenshot):

• Open Bookmarks Sidebar (Ctrl+B), expand a folder
• Open New Window #2 (Ctrl+N), same folder is expanded in the sidebar, close expanded folder
• Open New Window #3 (Ctrl+N), sidebar matches #2, expand a different folder
• Exit Firefox
• Start Firefox, sidebar matches the last change made during the previous session instead of the sidebar from the last closed window

Test #2 (session restore, second attached screenshot):

• [Picking up from previous test] Open Settings page and enable restore
• Open New Window #2 (Ctrl+N), same folder is expanded in the sidebar, close expanded folder
• Open New Window #3 (Ctrl+N), sidebar matches #2, expand a different folder
• Exit Firefox
• Start Firefox, sidebar in all three windows matches the last change made during the previous session

I think that confirms my guess that only the last change is saved.

Would it be possible to save this "per window"? I don't know. Mozilla launched a new "Ideas" site for feature suggestions, so you could submit this there and see whether it catches on:

The {"open":"true"} state of folders identified by a GUID (place:parent=IPH6U91qjDxi") in the sidebar is stored in xulstore.json and doesn't differentiate between windows and I don't think that it will be possible or easy to implement (I assume each window would have to have a fixed GUID similar to folders). The content in the sidebar is of type treechildren and content like that is harder to control where to open this list (well Firefox allows to set a default folder via a GUID for a new bookmark).

Firefox does store the last used folder automatically when you save a new bookmark without the need to be aware of how this works. I merely mentioned this to show that in some cases Firefox can remember the last used folder and select it automatically, so in theory it would be possible to save and select the last selected folder when closing and reopening the sidebar, but with a lot of bookmarks this would likely slow down opening the sidebar (scanning the list and scrolling to a specific folder) what would be undesirable.

well, each window has a sidebar using the same 'master' folder list, but i set to a particular bookmark folder, depending on which TAB it's on and which of the many open WINDOWS i'm working with. firefox does so much already, and continually improves - my fave is on restart, all windows are restored IN THE ORDER THEY WERE LAST IN, which has saved me much time. i think i'm just asking for something too complex and/or particular. right now, i shall continue reading the Rodriguez FBI interview, or at least get started on it. it's 195 double-spaced pages ... i need a 'break'. thanks a whole ton for your help. you will be rewarded. e
