I've noticed that with Firefox 102 when I download an exe file, in this case Thunderbird Setup 102.0.exe it is renaming it to Thunderbird Setup 102.0.exe.bin.

Why is that happening now? I know the "potential risk" or downloading an .exe file but shouldn't it ask or at least warn you instead of just deciding to rename it

I didn't see a setting to disable this "feature". Is there one?

Thanks

Hello, This issue may be related with "[meta] Implement URL parser per URL Standard", opened 9 years ago(!), but updated only 1 month ago (bugzilla). If somehow applicable, just let me know that my issue is already being taken care. Thank you.

D&D a Firefox URL into Windows File Explorer, may fail. Just try it for yourself (Firefox for Windows, version 102):

Will fail (notice the additional folder created): D&D on this URL will fail

Will fail and may even create an invincible 0 byte file (Windows is unable to delete it...): D&D this URL will also fail

Won't fail: D&D this URL will *not* fail

I only noticed this wrong behavior in version 102.0 (Firefox 64-bit for Windows) but, as I use this D&D functionality quite often, I don't believe this problem to have occurred much before 101.x. Only tested it in Windows though (Windows 10 Pro - 21H2 19044.1766, 64-bit). This thus seems to be a BUG introduced in version 101.x or 102.0

By trial & error, I think I eventually found out what is leading the D&D to eventually fail: it's related with the web page title (i.e., the Firefox tab title). This behavior has nothing to do with the URL value itself.

When D&D an URL into File Explorer, the URL shortcut name is supposed to be created with the webpage title. However, Windows filenames have some unsupported characters: \ / : * ? ” <> |

So, I guess Firefox should first parse this title and remove all these unsupported characters (or replace them with, e.g., “-“), before assigning the title to the shortcut name (a .URL file). Which, as I understand it, is not happening anymore. I have not found any issue with the URL value itself.

In fact, the D&D result may vary, depending on the characters the webpage name includes.

If it contains a “/”, it will create one (or more) Windows folders before creating the URL shortcut. E.g., if I D&D a webpage URL into “C:\my URL shortcuts folder”, with title “CAT5E Shielded 3/50μ Gold-Plated”, it will create a shortcut (with the correct link) in C:\my URL shortcuts folder\CAT5E Shielded 3\50μ Gold-Plated.URL Obviously, even though the URL content is right, this is not the expected behavior!

More troublesome can be a webpage title that contains a “:”, because it creates a 0-byte no extension file which sometimes (but not always) refuses to be deleted by Windows. E.g., if I D&D a webpage URL into “C:\my URL shortcuts folder”, with title “ShinobiHub – Article: How to Update”, it will create a zero-byte file in “C:\my URL shortcuts” folder with name “ShinobiHub – Article” (no extension). Trying to remove the file in File Explorer may display the error message: “Item not found. This is no longer located in <PATH>. Verify the item’s location and try again.”

[BTW, after some digging I find out how to remove the file: Just open a DOS window and type: del "\\?\C:\my URL shortcuts folder\ShinobiHub - Article " No need to restart or do anything else, just need to put \\?\ before the directory when using the del command. Also use the tab button to make sure the name is correct; sometimes a space is added at the end that can be easily missed.]

Strangely enough, a “Verified by: Cloudfare” (or something similar) is also display just below Firefox Url.

I’m not sure about the effect of other different unsupported file name characters. Anyway, this was tested in 2 different Windows computers, both with same faulty results. The same operation in Chrome works as expected.

Conclusion: This issue should be easy enough to find but I could not find any *recent* report on a similar issue. That makes me wonder… is this really a bug?... Please help. Thank you. Cecilio

Hi,

So far this year, Firefox updates are causing problems.

Sometimes it updates in the middle of my seeing patients.

It used to give me the option of restoring all tabs. Now it no longer permits that option, so I have to painstakingly go through my recent history and add each needed tab - very time-consuming and annoying. I don't want to switch to Chrome but may have to as I have to use it anyway for sites that don't support Firefox.

Hey there,

I use Adobe Acrobat Pro to open PDFs for work. It always worked fine, set up to automatically open PDFs in Adobe, and they save to Downloads folder. For some reason now, after an update, the PDF always pulls up a save box and asks me to name the file (significantly slows down workflow). This only happened after an update.

I've figured out that the issue is related to a way that the PDFs are generated. So if I click it via a link that ends in .html instead of .pdf, it assumes it's a webpage and opens the pdf link in browser, and from there I have to click save, and then I'm prompted to type in the file name.

If I open a PDF link that's an actual .pdf file URL, then it saves to Downloads automatically and names the file "contractfile-1111" or whatever, numbered consecutively. Any ideas on how to get around this?

Thanks

Thank you RobertJ! I am now able to see DownThemAll on my toolbar and use the extension, and I thank you! The next problem is that DownThemAll downloads the name but not the midi file. Each midi when you click on it has an automatic download feature that initiates for each file so that you can automatically download the file quickly and easily, however, DownThemAll cannot download the midi. I will provide a website so that you may try to download the midi to understand what DownThemAll does. http://breadsite.org/classic.htm If there is a fix, please help! Thanks again for the help I received from RobertJ,

For a couple of weeks now, and since the last update (102.0.1 64-bit), my Firefox displays odd characters in some pages and in all emails.

This issue doesn't happen in safari or Chrome.

I've cleared all cookies, and browsing data multiple times and re-installed Firefox and the issue comes back every time.

I recently ran into a problem with firefox and amazon. That was fixed by uninstalling/reinstalling and using links from the 'old firefox data' file. Some things did not come back as expected so I did a system restore. The last restore point was before the problem. That did not bring back the missing items though.

One of the things that changed is the 'shortcuts' The shortcuts I used have mostly gone away and do not re-populate, so far. I liked the convenience of having this list of frequently used shortcuts and half the ones I always used are gone.

The recent activity links seem to be limited to 16 and are huge icons.

Now there was a change to the control bar top of the page. Specifically the download status icon. It used to show the download progress and terminate when the dl is complete. NOW, and I find it annoying, upon completion of the dl, a drop down list of the most recent downloads pops-up. Why? I do not need to see that list every time a dl successfully occurrs. And why is there no way to let it go back to the previous operation?

There is an old adage that software developers don't seem to get: "If it aint broke, don't fix it."

Good Morning, Group!

I subscribe to the IEEE.ORG newsletter.

If I click on their link, it brings up a blank page in Firefox:

https://spectrum.ieee.org/post-quantum-cryptography-nist?utm_source=techalert&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=techalert-07-14-22&mkt_tok=NzU2LUdQSC04OTkAAAGFnAJMEXFrlR7vD0yYOspzMUWdvNdvtGqNnHnbEZI2pUuVQelTwBgCQS3pKCdhLl9XSWiE7boikHvLl6N43J65wa4D-JECtQ23ME38QU_rZMG4

That same link renders correctly in Chromium Web Browser (on Linux Mint 20.3)

By truncating the link to https://spectrum.ieee.org/ Firefox brings up that parent page O.K.

This behavior is not confined to this link in particular. It has behaved this way for some weeks (months?) now, in previous newsletters.

This is not an onerous situation but, if it could be fixed, it would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

- Ralph
