My bookmarks sidebar keeps on disappearing. I'll use ctrl-B to bring it back and it will be fine for a while when I close and re-open firefox but, after probably 3 or 4 times running firefox, it will be gone again and I have to use ctrl-B to bring it back. This just keeps happening over and over again every few times that I start firefox. I've tried running without any extensions or addons and the problem is still there.

Hello,

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

You can check for problems caused by a corrupted localstore.rdf file.

Thanks but I've already done that and it made no difference.

Thanks but I had already tried that before I posted here and it didn't make any difference.

Do you otherwise have problems with the toolbar customization because the localstore.rdf stores this data as well?

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

more options

No, I've never had any problems with toolbar customisation. I use just the Windows Security Essentials andFirewall.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

I started Firefox in safe mode, although nothing happened. I restarted firefox normally. The Sidebar was there. I closed and restarted firefox a number of times to see how long the sidebar would stay. On the 7th time I opened firefox, the sidebar was gone and I had to use ctrl-B to get it back again. I closed and restarted firefox again to see how long the sidebar would stay and, this time the sidebar was gone the 5th time I opened firefox and I had to use Ctrl-B to get it back. Now I'm just using firefox normally and waiting until the sidebar disappears again.

I should have said earlier that this is actually a new install of firefox. I had actually been using chrome until a few days ago and the last time I used firefox was on a previous install of Windows so, there wouldn't have been any leftovers from a previous install of firefox, just in case that's your next question :)
