Hi Ron, what happens now when you click the link? For example:

  • opens in the same tab
  • opens in a new tab

Did you want this everywhere, or only on specific sites?

Global Options

If the site doesn't code the link specially to open in a new window, it's normal to open in the same tab. There is an add-on you can use to modify the links so they target a new window: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/open-link-with-new-tab/ (after installation, check its settings to choose which links open where).

By default, Firefox will divert new windows to a new tab instead. If you want them to open in a separate window, you can uncheck that box on the Options page.

  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

The Tabs section is the second section. Uncheck the box for "Open links in tabs instead of new windows".

Does that get Firefox working the way you like?

Note that you can hold the Shift key and left-click a link to open the link in a new window.

Thank you for your help. I am so embarrassed. I was back clicking on something that wasn't a link. I'm sorry to have wasted your time!
