Been stuck for several days now on one email acct. Cannot highlight or open any other files or accounts to access mail. When I hover over a different acct or folder it just shows me a blank white page. Freaking out that all my mail is gone!? Cannot even close to start over. Have done several computer restarts, but that does not change TB at all. Have not been able to get or send or read mail for several days now. When I go to my ISP to read my mail there is no mail there either!! Freaking out. Thanks for any help!

re Thunderbird Safe Mode which you were testing as advised by Matt. Close down computer - wait - then restart computer. Start Thunderbird in Safe Mode by holding down the 'Shift' key while starting the application.

OK, I'm anxiously awaiting for a suggestion. TB still totally frozen and unresponsive. I cannot even close it. when I shut the computer down and restart, it comes back just the same as it was. This is not an ISP problem as I have ATT and AOL both incoming my TB and none of them work, nothing works, it is totally frozen and useless. I have not been able to read, send, nor receive mail in 4 days. Thank you.

It is a desktop PC; I have used TB on this computer for many years with no problems. Nothing new or changed on this end. TB just froze up the other morning and I cannot unfreeze it....or even close it. I have not updated anything. I do not know what version I am running I could find no way to find that info since TB is totally unresponsive. I do not have TB on another computer so cannot say if it works elsewhere; I don't have another computer. I use Windows Security; just checked and there are no threats and recent scan was done 12/2. Thank you.

Hello there

Can you remove it? Do you use imap or pop? Before removing Thunderbird and install a new version. You know how to do that?

Is it possible to remove the complete installation of Thunderbird? It s really jammed?yeah. Also no back-up?

This for Firefox. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/#product-desktop-release

Uninstalling Removing Thunderbird is pretty easy to do. But the process to uninstall Thunderbird varies depending on the operating system you are using. This chapter looks at the steps for uninstalling Thunderbird on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Uninstalling Thunderbird in Windows

Go to the Mozilla Thunderbird installation folder. This is most likely located at C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\uninstall. Double-click the helper.exe application file. The Thunderbird Uninstall Wizard opens up. Click the Uninstall button to begin removing Thunderbird from your computer. If you want to stop the removal process, click the Cancel button. Click the Finish button to complete the removal.

Uninstalling Thunderbird in Mac OS X Open a new window in the Finder. In the Applications folder, right-click Thunderbird.app. A menu appears. Select Move to Trash. In your user Library, right-click the Thunderbird folder. A menu appears. Select Move to Trash.

Check Thunderbirds version. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/find-what-version-thunderbird-you-are-using

This for the latest Thunderbird https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/download/

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/installing-thunderbird-windows

I will further try to see if I can still save your emails that were used with imap?

It is indeed a serious subject. I never heard it that way.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data Read this please.

The help menu opens but nothing opens when I click on Troubleshooting or anything; so cannot determine which version I have that way.

I don't recall if I am using imap or pop....and I cannot open that folder to see.

I literally cannot do anything with TB.....not even close it.

If I uninstall it will I lose all my mail? I have MUCH mail saved in files from many years containing information that I use frequently. I have LOTS of mail and various files/folders of lots of various information. I cannot lose it. And no I have no back up....of course. Surely TB has it *somewhere*.

Is it possible to open another TB window, or application I guess it is called, somehow? I've tried everything I can think of to do to do that, but to no avail.

more options

I know TB must be picking up my mail cause when I go to my ISP (ATT) it shows my inbox as empty. I pray TB has my mail *somewhere* and that somehow someone can figure out how to get it back to my computer. Many critical items I have been expecting, need to respond to, and have been unable to access since 11/30. this is absolutely horrible.

Hello there again. Houckj.

Read the subject in the form that I sent you. Thunderbird stores data of all successful emails. read under the heading of :

Finding your profile without opening Thunderbird

It s still all there. Can you try this?

Send me a picture of the latest from your Thunderbird action. Where it s been going wrong.

What kind of OS do you run on this desktop machine of yours?

That's a relief. I will check that out tomorrow with a bit fresher brain; am brain dead from all this. I am running W10. How to send a picture? I can't do any email. There is nothing really to send you. The screen is frozen on an open email account in TB. Can't close that folder/account; can't highlight or open anything of the messages in that folder; can't move around in that folder; can't switch to a different account; can't even close TB. Totally frozen. When I do a restart on the computer it still comes back....just that one screen of that one account. Thank you; I appreciate your help.

I was able to find which TB I have by going into Windows Security which states that the TB app is "not working" and cannot be fixed automatically. In that window it says that I am using version 60.9.1. It also has a button to click to uninstall. You are sure that if I uninstall it my mail will be somewhere and will load automatically when I re-install?

Pop only connects to server Inbox and downloads emails. So all the folders you see in Thunderbird pop mail account and any you created will not show emails on server. Pop accounts can also download and delete emails off server by default unless you selected otherwise in Account Settings. So, if nothing is viewable via webmail, it is possible you had a pop mail account.

Imap accounts show a sort of virtual copy of what is on server, so all folders and all emails are actually stored on the server. If you used Imap and nothing is on server, then it could be a cause for concern.

How to tell if you were using pop or imap: check your profile folders. By default they will be here unless you selected another location: C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\<Profile name> folder.

The Profile name folder is usually called 'xxxxxxxx.default' where the x's are letters and numbers.

In profile name folder, there will be a 'Mail' folder. Click on 'Mail' folder. This will show you all your pop mail accounts and also 'Local Folders' mail account.

If you were using Imap, then click on 'ImapMail' folder and it will list your imap mail accounts.

Q: Are you able to stop Thunderbird using 'Task Manager' ? Right click on 'Task Bar' and select 'Task Manager' Select 'Thunderbird' and click on 'End Task'

Try making a backup of profile, assuming you do not have one already. Usually, it is advised you exit Thunderbird before creating a backup, but please try to do this anyway. C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird Make a copy of the 'Thunderbird' folder and paste it to an external hard drive or usb of suitable size or create folder on desktop called 'TB Backup' and paste it into that folder.

Once you have a backup....

When you uninstall Thunderbird, it only uninstalls the Program and not the Profile folders. Locate the installed program, it will be in one of the following locations: If you have a 64bit computer and installed the windows32bit version of Thunderbird it will be here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\ If you have a 64bit computer and installed the windows64bit version of Thunderbird it will be here: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\ Delete the 'Mozilla Thunderbird' folder. then empty the 'Recycle Bin'

You can then download a fresh version of Thunderbird version 60.9.1 from here: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/60.9.1/win32/ Choose the prefered language eg: en-GB is English British Then click on ' Thunderbird Setup 60.9.1.exe' to get download.

Totally stumped here. Have done an uninstall and installed....from the link you sent a fresh version. It is still doing the same thing. The fresh version is also frozen on that same page! Absolutely nothing works in TB on my computer. I cannot even close it. I even have a computer guy here the past hour helping me do this. He has done some things, cleaned up some old files, defragged, installed FFox update. Still frozen. He has now walked away and said he's never seen anything like this and has no other ideas. I then did a complete shut down....as opposed to simply a restart. Booted back up. There was no TB, so I installed....again from the link you sent. It is still frozen on that same page. Nothing works in the TB app at all. Been like this since 11/30. There has GOT to be a way to close TB!! and start over?? Have now done 2 uninstalls and 2 installs. What now? I HAVE to get to my email.

Hello there Houckj

https://youtu.be/JPfGoSanG98 (Scanned with virus total.)

https://youtu.be/Ai9MKSWdqAo

Hi there Houckj

we have an instructional video for you, even though the computer boy has visited.

It is that you can fully access your stuff on your computer.

Except for Thunderbird itself now.

I hope the video does some good.

The video shows where your emails in certain folders as intended in the subject are located including instructions.

Try to watch the videos. If this doesn't work and you can't get Thunderbird on the rails. Then think of hardware/soft technical advice.

Had to hire remote tech to deal with this. Turns out it was a Chrome problem interfering. Uninstalled Chrome. Still getting the "unresponsive script" window related to Chrome when I try to open TB after a restart or shut down. So then he installed latest Java and TB now works. Totally weird. I have used and loved TB forever and never ever had a problem. Can't imagine why all of a sudden out of the clear blue it froze up like this and no one could figure out why. Makes me very insecure now about using TB as I do so much on email it is critical that I be able to access and use it. Thank you all for your help. I appreciate it.

up, chrome script errors do not usually relate to the product chrome, they relate to the convention of calling the stuff around the content in a user interface chrome. like a chrome bumper on a car. Pretty but mostly useless.

Have you actually turned your computer off at the power point. but clicked on restart, but off and left it off for 10 minutes. If not do so!

One week later and TB is totally frozen AGAIN. When I got up yesterday morning my TB icon was gone from my task bar. When I clicked to open from the desktop it was frozen. Already had to pay a tech guy to get it unfrozen last week after trying every suggestion made here.

He did it by uninstalling Chrome and then installing (or updating, not sure) Java, uninstalling TB and reinstalling...... and it worked then. I called him back this morning and he said there is nothing else he can do. It is frozen exactly like it was a week ago. I cannot do a thing in the TB app....can't even close it; can't open any mail; can't highlight anything, nothing. Exactly the same as described previously. Just a frozen screen showing one of my inboxes.....but I cannot do anything in it. Extraordinarily frustrating to the max. And yes I have turned it off at the power point overnight and booted it back up this morning. Same frozen. And no I cannot check or change the settings in TB as I cannot do *anything* in TB. This is just insanely crazy.

I am getting the same "nonresponsive script" message that I was getting before....where you have the option to "cancel" or allow it to "continue". The box says "chrome://messenger/contentmailwindowoverlay.js:2853" And supposedly the tech guy removed Chrome last week.

Can anyone help....please. Is there any place else to go to look for help? Thanks!

As I posted in this thread a week ago, chrome errors rarely relate to the product chrome. But obviously you either did not read that or you did not comprehend it.

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird I suggest you try the following. My guess it the problem is your anti virus program and not Thunderbird or Chome or Java. So try these steps and report your results;

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
  • Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

re :I am getting the same "nonresponsive script" message that I was getting before....where you have the option to "cancel" or allow it to "continue".

You should select 'Cancel'.

re :The box says "chrome://messenger/contentmailwindowoverlay.js:2853" And supposedly the tech guy removed Chrome last week. 'Chrome' is not 'chrome'. 'Chrome' is a browser.

Q: Do you have a lot of emails in your Inbox ? Q: Is this an IMAP or POP mail account? You were asked what you use, but still no answer on this. I suspect it might be POP since you said there was nothing on server,...please tell the forum.

Check the proxy setting. Close computer and wait for 10 minutes. Start computer. Start Thunderbird in Offline mode via 'Run' app.

  • Type 'Run' in the Windows Search box and select 'Run' app.
  • Type: thunderbird.exe -offline

Note there is a space between .exe and -offline click on OK

  • Menu Icon > Options > Advanced > Network & Disk Space
  • click on 'Settings'
  • select: “Use system proxy settings”.

Was that option already selected or did you need to select it?

  • click on OK

Exit Thunderbird. Wait for background processes to complete. Start Thunderbird.

REport back on results.

Matt, thank you for response, however as I have said I can do nothing in TB. The help menu with the restart without add ons that you suggested is in TB and is not operable.
