No extensions added, nothing different with the computer, not visiting new sites. Just came out of nowhere. Only been using firefox for about 2 weeks and don't know what the problem can be.

We're sorry to hear that Firefox is crashing. In order to assist you better, please follow the steps below to provide us crash IDs to help us learn more about your crash.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A list of Submitted/Unsubmitted Crash Reports will appear, similar to the one shown below.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent Submitted Report IDs that start with bp- and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.

Note: If a recent Report ID does not start with bp- click on it to submit the report.

(Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the IDs. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like.)

I'm also now having trouble getting websites to load. I have cleared cookies and cache and did an avast scan for malware that was clean.

Hi Kcl,

Since this is a relatively new account perhaps creating a new profile will fix the issue with crashing.

Firefox saves your personal information and preferences in the Profile Manager.

To do this :

  • Type about:profiles in address bar
  1. Click Create a New Profile
  • This will prompt the creation wizard.
  • Once complete it will be listed in the Profile Manager (about:profiles)
  1. Click set as default profile (the time you start Firefox this will be your default)

Hi WMagic- will that cause me to lose my extensions? I don't want to have to go through the set up over and over again just to use Firefox. I like it but not if it's not going to be stable and consistent.

Hi Kcl,

You can backup your profile which includes all of your important data before moving forward :

See : Backing up your profile {link}

Once your new profile is created, you can sign-in to sync by clicking the avatar icon in the top right of your browser and all of your extensions should load up with the newly created profile.

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Note: Firefox comes in three or more folders on all computers. They are;

Maintenance: (Programs Folder) <Windows Only> Firefox itself: (Programs Folder) And two folders in the profile of each user on the computer for each Firefox profile for that user.

If you remove the Firefox folder, the user profiles would not be affected.

Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Note: Check Both Folders

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Look for, and remove any Mozilla or Firefox program folders. Do not remove the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

Do Not remove any profile folders.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

Hi Fred- I am not remotely a tecchie- can you tell me what this means?

And regarding reinstalling- my concern is that I will do something wrong and really mess things up. I'd like to understand why this is happening before I risk erasing my computer or some other amateur mistake.

If Firefox requires a lot of maintenance like this whenever problems arise, it may not be the right browser for me. I used chrome since it launched and never had these problems, but was looking for an option for more security/privacy but I fear I'm in over my head.

Thank you both for your help and patience- and hopefully more knowledge

And regarding reinstalling . . . .

Sometimes the problem is corrupt program files. A clean reinstall removes and replaces such files.
