Cannot set Google as search engine

The standard way to set a search engine in Firefox for Android is to go to the search engine's website, long-press on the search bar, and select 'Add search engine'. However this does not work for google.com. Long-pressing on the google.com search bar does nothing except activate text selection, as shown in the screenshot below. Long-pressing on the search bars of other search engines works correctly, as shown for bing.com below.

Is there a way to fix this? Is there a workaround so that I can set a custom search engine? Note that the default Google search option in Firefox is no good as it defaults to google.co.uk, not google.com.
