Hello there,

I had been asked to create a signature for a client in Thunderbird. Having never used this software before I have spent a long time (a lot longer than I billed for) sorting it out. I thought I had after creating the signature in a TB email and saving the file as html. This works very well. Example here:

file:///Users/jasonsmith/Desktop/Social%20Shapes/Clients/CMC/Signatures/HTML%20signatures/test.html

However, after testing I found the signature images (in the first email) were not showing on a reply. I don't write code so am struggling to find a solution. Someone out there more knowledgeable than I, please help!

I will copy and paste the code to another message as it is rather long, too long. The code for the images looks seriously array.

Thank you in advance.

Jason

Hello, it has been 2 weeks since I first posted. Sorry to repeat myself but my client is being patient but I cannot rely on that much longer. I am keen to reach a conclusion on this, even if it is to confirm it's a wider Thunderbird issue that cannot be fixed. At least then, I can look at other options. Thank you. Jason

When you were creating the original signature , did you create it in a Thunderbird 'Write' window and then save as a html file?

It seems to comprise of a simple table with a couple of images and some text, a simple thing to create in Thunderbird but it also has a other inserted code.

for example: Did you copy paste from a google docs ? Did you use Miscrosoft Office ?

There is also at least a dozen instances of div class="moz-signature".

I'm sending an email to you. Please do a Reply.

Hello there,

To confirm, I created the signature in an open Thunderbird email and saved the file as html file. I then went to Tools and Acc Settings and Attached the Signature From a File.

I've looked in my Sent Folder to you Anje and the images have disappeared.

Images still broken due to changes in Content Transfer Encoding.

What setting have you got under your 'Send options' ? Please try this:

  • Thunderbird > Preferences > Composition > 'General' tab
  • click on 'Send Options' button.
  • Do not select - uncheck if selected: "send message as plain text if possible".
  • click on 'OK'
  • click on 'OK'

Restart Thunderbird. then send me email with you pretending signature as your own.

Could you do a test for me regarding the images used. Please resave/rename them as .jpg images instead of png.

then create signature using the jpg images. send a new test email using jpg.

I am sorry to report, after making yr changes as directed Toad Hall and saving the images as jpgs, I'm still having the same issue.

When I send and then check in my received email account; images are showing correctly.

When I reply, the original email (i.e. with the signature) comes back to me in Tb with the images are broken.

I've also REPLIED and added another address, Outlook, and the images are broken in there too!

What you're saying is fine, definitely isn't when I test myself. This is also the experience of my client too.

If Tb cannot support image stability on a replied email then please just let me know. We are in our third week of trying to find a solution for this and any confidence of this being sorted is slipping away.

Initial Email 'A' you originally sent to me was received and all images visible. I replied back to you 'B' - my saved sent email is ok. You said that the received 'B' email from me still showed images. Then you replied to me 'C'. At this point you mention you have lost image in your saved email. When I received the 'C' 'Reply' it shows the images are now broken.

However, I've just noticed that when you are doing that last 'C' 'Reply', you replied using your iphone and not Thunderbird. Looking back over some previous tests, the images became broken after you has 'replied' using the iphone.

Please use Thunderbird. Locate the email 'B' which I sent to you as a Reply where images are showing and please do a Reply using Thunderbird, so we can complete that part of the testing.

Hi, thanks for your reply and sorry for any earlier frustrations.

I have not received any emails/replies from you in Tb for some reason. I have been conversing with you via my gmail account.

Also, my client's customers are probably not using Tb but a vast array of different devices and email providers, so does me replying from Tb make a difference?

Regards, Jason

The original signature file you were using was full of non thunderbird Microsoft html/css. So it was not created from scratch in Thunderbird. I can only assume it was copy pasted from something created using Outlook or an MS product into a thunderbird 'Write' window and then saved as a html file.

The file I sent to you had all this corrected, including the spelling mistake and also the width of the Table was too small which made the line; Specialty Coffee...Coffee to make you smile. put the last word 'smile' on another line whcih looked a bit messy. However, it seems you did not use it.

The product your client uses is 'Thunderbird' and so therefore you perform all tests within Thunderbird to ensure that everything is working correctly within thunderbird. In order to know where a fault is occuring you have to rule out the package the user is using - Thunderbird.

I can send and do replies between Thunderbird and webhost, bt yahoo server and gmail server. I have performed this to a three tier reply to various servers including gmail and everything is perfectly ok. So Thunderbird itself has no problem doing replies with any of those servers.

re :I have not received any emails/replies from you in Tb for some reason. Have you created a pop or imap mail account? As you use gmail, then gmail will only allow one pop from server - you would need to modify the user name you download additional times, so if you had already viewed using another means eg: Outlook or phone then this may explain the reason whcy thunderbird could not download it. If you had all those emails being filtered to another folder on the server, then pop account would not have access to something other than Inbox.

How do you think you could test anything in Thunderbird if you do not have it working perfectly for you?

re: I have been conversing with you via my gmail account. gmail account via what means webmail or Outlook or another email client ?

I have received some replies from you that are perfectly ok, so if those were via webmail or Outlook then they are working as expected.

The one thing I can confirm is that everytime you do a 'Reply' using the iphone it is doing it in a way that enforces the use of plain text and causing 'quoted-printable' which cannot read the images and therefore displays the Alternative or the image name as a link instead. Plain text does not show images inline.

You could see images in replies from me initially, but not after using the iphone and nor could I see any images after you had replied using iphone. So if you have been doing a 'Reply from the phone and the iphone sent email showed no image and then viewing it via eg: gmail webmail and you still cannot see image then the one thing you can be sure of is that it is not Thunderbird causing this.

Emails sent as plain text end up altering the display of images that were previously sent as html.

I'm not sure whether you are using imap on phone. Obviously, the final 'Reply' from your phone will be in your phone sent folder. This I'm assuming will not show images. If you logon to gmail webmail and see a copy of the last reply you sent from your phone, I reckon it will not show images. I would expect all the other non iphone emails to show the images.

Suggest you have alook at the info and see if the iphone needs modifying to ensure it is not just sending using plain text. Then perform some more tests.

Note: You cannot always control how another person chooses to send emails, but at least this info will be able to confirm what your iphone is doing.

The images were created using Photoshop, saved as jpgs and were added to the signature in an open Tb message using the INSERT option in the Tb menu. They were NOT copied and pasted, as you suggest.

All my testing, where images have come back to me broken, was done using my mac laptop. Maybe once, I replied using my iPhone. I have not ran tests using that device recently. I'm afraid focusing on the iPhone issue, is not going to solve a problem that I am experiencing on my laptop.

All I ask, is to have an easy step-by-step guide to create a signature in Tb so the images are stable wherever they go.

Please remember, we are not as technically aware as your selves. I came here asking for help nearly 3 weeks ago and am just keen to get this sorted for my client.
