"About Firefox" says my version 48.0.1 is up-to-date. When I check to see if my plug-ins are up-to-date, that page says my Firefox is an older version.

"About Firefox" says my version 48.0.1 is up-to-date. When I check to see if my plug-ins are up-to-date, that page says my Firefox is an older version. I press the update button and am prompted to download a small stub file for 48.0.2. I execute this file. It tries to download an approximately 165MB file with prompts for initial setups. Whether I want a shortcut on the desktop et al. I don't want to download the entire browser software all over again. The disagreement between the two pages indicates a problem.

You get a message about Firefox being out of date on this page?

https://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck/

That shouldn't happen when you have Firefox 48.anything because all Firefox 48 versions identify themselves as "Firefox/48.0".

(Only https://input.mozilla.org and https://support.mozilla.org have permission to ask you to share more details about your browser, not that site.)

So I'm not sure what's happening there. When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes. If you do not see the number going down on the page, you can reload it using Ctrl+r to check progress.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). This likely will log you out of this support site and Sync. While viewing the problem page, try either:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Cookies" button

In the dialog that opens, the current site should be pre-filled in the search box at the top of the dialog so you can remove that site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

There actually is a minor 48.0.2 update that you'll probably get automatically in the next week. Unless you have the crashes mentioned on the following page -- in which case you probably are pulling your hair out -- there's no rush for you: https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/48.0.2/releasenotes/

Yes, the plugin page is where I get a message. Also, I clear all caches after every use. I also tried reloading the page after a clean start. Same result.

About one week ago I received a reminder (win 8.1 taskbar) that the 48.0.2 is ready. After that session I went to "about Firefox" and it said it was up to date. I check my plugins less often. That is when I noticed the conflicting message.

Meanwhile, another user reported getting the same message on the Plugin Check page. We didn't get to the bottom of why that appears, considering that Firefox only reports the whole number part of your version (in other words, 48.0.2 is reported as 48.0), so websites shouldn't be picky about minor updates.

The only website so far that has conflicting information is Mozilla. No other website outside of Mozilla has notified me of any version difference. I was only reporting this because there might be an issue with the notification system within Firefox. One page within Mozilla is not in sync with another. I will ignore the plugincheck page which wants me to download a full 48.0.2 and wait until "About Firefox" shows 48.0.2 is available. Thanks for your help!

I have the same problem  :-( That is, when I check FF version (help about Firefox), then check plugins I get conflicting update messages: "Firefox is up to date" "You are using an older version of Firefox."

I cleared cache and cleared cookies and still same messages.

Hi gordon55y, Firefox 49.0 was released on Tuesday, but only a small set of users get the automatic update in the first few days so Mozilla can watch for whether any emergency fixes are needed before pushing it out more widely. If your Firefox doesn't update by this time next week, THEN I would start to think there's a problem.

My "About Firefox" is still saying that 47.0.1 is up to date, while the plugin check page says it's old.

Before that, the prompt to update worked fine on this system for years.

(Win 7 64, using 32-bit FF, because 64-bit FF seemed to have no advantage but used more RAM)

Hi mjwm, I'm not sure why that is. Possibly the current version (49.0.2) wasn't indicated for your browser for some reason. ??

To download a full installer, visit the following page and scroll down to your preferred language:

https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

If you run Windows, and need plugins other than Flash and Silverlight -- Java, Google Talk, VLC, etc. -- choose the standard Windows version rather than the 64-bit Windows version.
