How do I export contacts in the address books?

I am trying to export my contacts from my address book and when I click on Export it opens a window but there are no files to chose from. I have checked the View - Layout - Toolbar - Directory Pane is checked but it still does not work and there are no further instructions. Can someone please advise the steps to do this? I thought it would be a simple process but not sure why not working. Thanks.

You select an address book to export. Do not select All Books. The window that opens wants you to say where to save the file. Thunderbird knows what file to export without your help.
