38.01 redirects LAN address
When FF updated my browser, without my consent. it broke my security system for my house. I was able in the past hit a bookmark that was "othercomputer/room/snapshot" Now that I am running the latest and greatest, nothing works. FF puts a www. in front and will not let me remove it. Like malware FF38.01 is redirecting to a web address that I don't want. I am afraid that this may be the end of Firefox for me. I can not use it as I have for years? Every week more problems. I work on Firefox more than I do with it. Whatever I have to do to fix this I will have to do it to 7 computers. AGAIN, Several hours a week almost every week trying to get FF to do what it used to do.

I do have a mothballed but working XP machine but am using Linux at present. I am not sure what change may be affecting you.
Mozilla would not suggest you use third party ESR builds for a couple of reasons, however it would be a useful troubleshooting step to install and try Firefox portable ESR (Currently Fx31.7)
It will install as a separate additional browser.
- ESR is intended for enterprise deployments , and has a slower update cycle

I am able to use numeric style bookmarks|addresses e.g.
- http://192.168.0.1 <- my router
(Actually entered and displayed without the http:// protocol) - http://63.245.217.50 <- support.mozilla.org
- Or local files on the same machine e.g. file:///home/<name>/Desktop/<filename.extn>
Linux differs rather from Windows
and file:///media/<name>/<partition>/Documents%20and%20Settings/Public/Documents/<file>
What form of address are you using that no longer works but worked before ? Are you able to use the sorts of address I give as example above ?
Are you able to find a change listed in
- Release notes https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/38.0/releasenotes/

I also noticed a automatic update over ride on my Mac running Mountain Lion. My concern is that when I try to determine through Mozilla forum how to authenticate Firefox application I don't see any examples or youtube postings.
How can you be sure Firefox 38.01 is authentic?

It would have been beter to post your own question using [questions/new/] but I will give a quick answer here.
Use only the official sites for downloads, notlinks you finf=d on the interneto in pop-ups. When upadting let Firefox do that automaticlly. Prompt Firefox to check by using Firefox Button -> Help -> about Firefox
Use getfirefox.com or https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ Do not try to search for or use use getfirefox.net
