Firefox crashes

In the last week or so, Firefox usually comes up with a message that it crashed unexpectedly after I close it. It has never actually crashed, but it keeps saying it did. I have tried refreshing it, but it continues to give me the error messages.

What problems could cause it to tell me repeatedly that firefox is crashing when otherwise it seems to work fine?

Starting in Firefox 36, there is a function to track whether Firefox did not shut down normally within a minute and if there was a problem, it captures data on a presumed "shutdown hang".

If you check the crash data saved by Firefox and click through to the report online, you may see that indication there. Or if you want comments on those reports, you can share the crash report IDs with us.

The last section of this article describes how to get those IDs: Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly).

Thanks! This is the report ID: bp-198efe53-34cd-4e35-9b42-1f7082150329 The report really didn't mean anything to me. Does it tell you what the problem is?

The crash report flagged these programs;

Signature shutdownhang

atidxx32.dll = Advanced Micro Devices

Check for updates for the above.

Thanks. What is that and how do I check for updates? It is not an add-on, and I checked and all of those are updated.

The crash report "signature" is shutdownhang | _PeekMessage. Unusually slow and seemingly stalled shutdowns are a new thing Firefox is tracking starting in version 36, so we're not too familiar at this point with what causes them.

FredMcD's suggestion refers to your graphics card driver software, but problems with that kind of software usually manifest in much more dramatic crashes or operational problems, so I'm not sure that is relevant in this case.

I am replying here since there seems to be no option to report crash report comments by user.

Using Firefox 39: All the crash reports that have come from my Firefox due to a second profile I use on a zip drive. I am not complaining because they are unnoticed by the user.

If someone wants to cross-reference my email address here with the crash report: bp-b084ef79-e047-4d10-8987-f1b6e2150806 then be my guest. Firefox 39 never crashes with my main profile. Please don't tell me to put the profile somewhere else. I just want someone here with the know how to, perhaps, forward this message with my email address to the developers, de-buggers or people who analyze crash reports that this is the cause. A second profile on a zip drive.

That's all.

Hi Axis, do you want to start a new question and link to some of the other reports? It would be interesting to know whether they all have the same sequence of events, as that would point pretty directly to something to investigate. It's hard to tell from a single report whether it's just a fluke.

As you know, you can start a new question at the following link: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/new/desktop/fix-problems

If the suggestions provided in the submit-a-question process are not helpful, just scroll down past them to continue with the new post.

Also, when you say a zip drive, do you mean an actual Zip-brand cartridge drive from back in the day? Or an external hard drive or flash memory drive?

Hi jscher2000--

It is good to talk to you again. No, I don't think it useful...and yes I mean a "old fashioned" zip drive from "back in the day."

So that is the obvious source of the crashes (though they are unnoticeable to the user). Since I know this is a funky way to run FF, and since I know they are due to that profile on the zip cartridge, it seems more fair to the people analyzing these crashes for me to just turn off crash reporting.

Firefox 39 has been running sweet...never has crashed in my main profile. It is good to talk to you again, as I said, and since I ended up in this thread by clicking something in the crash reporting page, I will just leave it here. I am also going to quit receiving emails, so goodbye for now. Talk to you again when there is a "real" problem...smile.

Kind Regards, Axis

Hi jscher2000--

I decided it was simply better to use PortableFirefox instead of a trying to run another profile from my "old fashioned" zip drive from "back in the day."
