The refresh button on mozilla.org for firefox doesn't work at all.

I use Firefox. It's my preferred browser, but lately its been acting up. Every time I put the computer into sleep-mode with FireFox still active, it freezes when I wake it up. I can't load any new sites on different tabs or even a new window. When I close it to reopen, it says that its still running and that I need to close it before starting a new one. So I go into my task manager and I see that its still running. I tell it to stop, with administrative authority, and it doesn't respond. It just keeps running.

So I go to mozilla.org to use the refresh FireFox button and it doesn't work. At all.

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and remove cookies only from websites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

What I mean is that I want to use the refresh option so that my Firefox will run faster by going back to its default state. My problem is that it just doesn't. I press the button to start the process and nothing happens.

In what way is Firefox running slow?

You can create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

I'd rather use the refresh Firefox option that is available on the Site before I do anything that requires to mess with stuff that I don't understand.

However, i can't do that. I click the button and it doesn't respond. That is what I need help with right now.

I had the same issue not so long ago. I could not reset the browser, or even create a new profile. I ended up doing this; Close Firefox.

Open the file browser / explorer on your computer. Note: You may have to enable Show Hidden Folders / Files. Enter this in the address bar;

Windows: %AppData%\Mozilla\ C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\ http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Windows Linux: ~/.mozilla/ http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Linux Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/ http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Mac

Rename the profiles.ini file by adding .old to it. Now restart Firefox.

If this works, please open the old file with a text viewer and post it here.

There is a Refresh button built into Firefox, you don't need to visit a website to use it. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

It's in the upper right corner. Please be aware of what settings are kept and which are lost. Those are outline in the support article: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.
