Firefox stops loading pages and won't close

This started to happen two days ago. I'm using Firefox 36.0.1 on my brother's laptop, always using private browsing, and things seem to work fine for 5-10 minutes. After that, the browser won't load or refresh any website at all, it just shows the spinning wheel and/or a white page, with no error messages.

After trying to close and open process again, I receive a dialog saying that Firefox is running already. I can see the process running but I can't close it with task manager. Have to reboot and manually delete the parent.lock file on my profile folder.

Once I can open it, after 5 minutes, it happens again.

What I've tried: Deleted cache, cookies and history. Disabled extensions. Disabled Javascript. Went to normal browsing. Went Into safe mode. Made a new profile. Refreshed Firefox. Uninstalled and reinstalled.

Last seemed to work, installed Adblock and managed to recover my bookmarks. Worked for 1 hour, then it happened again.

Checked for my firewall, there was an exception already. Checked my antivirus, my brother's laptop uses Avast, disabled webshield. No need to check for proxys, don't use them. Everything was working fine till two days ago.

Posting from my desktop computer. My current browser has more plugins and extensions installed. This one works fine. So I'm putting my brother's specs.

Version: 36.0.1 Extensions: only Adblock Plus and Download Helper Plugins: Shockwave Flash and Java all up-to-date. OS: Win 8 64bit Sys Specs (don't know if this is relevant): Intel I7 3,5GHz 8GB RAM

Oh, and I tried the solutions here. Firefox can't load websites but other browsers can Seems this was an issue that happened on older versions of Firefox.

Did a malware scan with MalwareBytes, found some bugs. Cleaned them up, rebooted system. Still nothing, firefox still won't load pages after 5 minutes, and won't close after.

I'm giving up here...

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

more options

I'll try with the other antispyware solutions.

Yes, going in safe mode still triggers the problem.

Here's the info, It's in spanish.

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe web sites.

Starting The Computer In Safe Mode;
Free Online Encyclopedia

Wait a few minutes (don't go anywhere), then close it. Is the problem still there?

more options

Tried with the rest of the anti-malware programs, found a couple more bugs, then I tried again, didn't worked.

BUT I restarted in safe mode like you said, and tried some sites during ~20 minutes, pages were loading completely without any issues. Closed the program fully, at last. Managed to boot it up again. I'm using Firefox as I write this post, without any problems so far. I'll reboot the laptop to normal mode and I'll update.

more options

It didn't work. Pages load normally for only 10 minutes, then it stops loading any pages again.

Still have the parent.lock error.

more options

To confirm, you started the COMPUTER in safe mode?

more options

To recap: yes, I started it on safe mode w/networking, tried firefox and it seemed to work fine. Rebooted back to normal mode, problem still persists.

It could be the work of one of your add-ons, or even add / mal-ware.

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac:<Command>)<Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Make sure you know what each one is and what it does.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All of them.

Also, check the programs that are on your computer

Windows: Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

Go thru the list. If you find something that you don't know what it is, use a web search.

Troubleshoot Firefox Issues Caused By Malware {web link}

more options

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Disable a few add-ons, then Restart Firefox.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All of them.

If the problem continues, disable some more (restarting FF). Continue until the problem is gone. After, you know what group is causing the issue. Re-enable the last group ONE AT A TIME (restarting FF) until the problem returns.

Once you think you found the problem, disable that and re-enable all the others, then restart again. Let us know who the suspect is detective.

In order to follow up in this thread, Cubito, what were the results of the troubleshooting steps listed above by FredMcD on the affected computer?

Something is preventing Firefox from closing properly and in order to move forward, confirmation for any changes for disabling each extension is important. We look forward to your reply.

Please keep in mind it's my brother's laptop, It's not available for me all the time, bear with me.

The only extension I have on it is the Avast Online Security (if you recall from my other posts, I made a different profile, refreshed the browser, and uninstalled and reinstalled firefox) and I disabled that. Updated my Avast antivirus to latest version, and disabled web shield again.

I'll test for a couple of more minutes till my brother gets his laptop back, then I'll ask him to keep trying on Firefox. I'll try to get back to you people later tonight.

Here's another dump from the browser:

If he's running something else in his damn computer while using it, he doesn't want to tell me.

I give up. It's his mess now.

Thanks for the help anyway.

Were you able to solve the problem? If not I was having the same issue, pages would stop loading after a few mins. I posted the instructions to solve the problem here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1052489#answer-707100
