No matter what I do my browser history will not clear.
I have tried everything suggested including removing cookies, all the clear history methods, etc. etc. My browser still has a dropdown full of options when I type in one letter.

Are you talking about history? Or are you talking about Form & Search History?
Type about:preferences#privacy <enter> in the address bar.
The button next to History, select Use Custom Settings.
At the bottom of the page, turn on Clear History When Firefox Closes. At the far right, press the Settings button. Turn on Cache and Form And Search History.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.
