Firefox presents no problems with popups in contrast with Thunderbird. In Thunderbird popup window for e.g. Tools or Settings opens in mini size and is elusive, unreadable and unclickable. For this reason it is, for example, impossible to print any email messages. Printing is no porblem with Firefox.

How to repair this problem?

That will depend on what the delivery method is. If it is an EXE file, run it. It will wither create an installer or actually do the install. Most common these days is do the install, as your not alone in your limited skiill set.

My problem relates to popups in normal mode: I cannot access the addons in order to disable them one at a time. No problem doing this in safe mode.

The following addons are installed: Adblock Plus 2.6.6, Browsing Protection 2.115.2794 (now disabled), F-Secure Search 1.0, NoScript 2.6.9.10. In addition there are the usual Java and Adobe tools (latest updates).

Would you have any suspect in mind?

PS. Now this forum looks the way it should.

Well, I am still working on this problem. Seems Thunderbird performs the way it should (i.e. popups open in normal size and are clickable) in safe mode only. The problem with popups persists when I open Thunderbird with addons disabled (one of the options when selecting safe mode). Does this mean that the problem is somewhere else than addons?

I checked error messages and found this one:

Aikaleima: 8.1.2015 11:45:34 Varoitus: Unknown property '-moz-border-radius'. Declaration dropped. Lähdetiedosto: https://www.mozilla.org/fi/thunderbird/release/start/?uri=/thunderbird/start/&locale=fi&version=31.3.0&os=WINNT&buildid=20141127140543 Rivi: 169, Sarake: 25 Lähdekoodi:

      -moz-border-radius: 5px 5px 0 0;

Does this message have any connection to my problem?

(I apologize for continuing to pester you with this problem. I will stop as soon as popup windows behave normally as they should.)

I noted another new error message which may have bearing on the popup problem:

re :Seems Thunderbird performs the way it should (i.e. popups open in normal size and are clickable) in safe mode only. The problem with popups persists when I open Thunderbird with addons disabled (one of the options when selecting safe mode).

This seems to point to 'themes' as Zenos seemed to think in an earlier post. As in safe mode themes is disabled along with all extensions addons etc. However, in 'addons disabled' mode, themes will be the only one running.

So I presume you are using the 'default theme 31.3.0', as you have already said you have not installed any additional themes.

As this seems to be an issue with default theme display, Close Thunderbird. Create a backup of profile; if you haven't done one recently.

Then uninstall Mozilla Thunderbird via 'Control Panel' > 'Programs and Features'. Select 'Mozilla Thunderbird' and click on uninstall.

Then download a fresh version from here:

look for prefered language, then download the one for Windows.

I backed up the profile, uninstalled Thunderbird and downloaded & installed a fresh version as instructed.

Unfortunately, there is no change in the way the popup windows perform. Most of the time they pop up too small and unreadable, but then they may open fleetingly in normal size, but for too short a time to really catch anything before they are back to their original minuscule self. Seems we are back to square one?

Luckily, Firefox shows no such odd behaviour, at least for the time being.

I should add that I have occasional problems with font size when writing a message. It appears that the font size changes as if by itself even in the middle of a word though if I have fixed it to medium or whatever. This cab be often remedied by erasing the faulty font and starting again.

Christ 1 & Toad-Hall. Wonder whether you have come up with any new solutions to my problem. I am now using Thinderbird in safe mode and popup windows open without problems. This is an exceptional mode, though, and would like to see similar popup windows in normal mode, too.

Was the technical info I sent on Jan 9 of any use? Unfortunately the button "Copy text on desktop" did not react and the format was rather messy compared with what it would have been had I been able to attach the original form. Anything else I could do here to assist your problem solving?

more options

There's nothing obvious in the Troubleshooting Information. Since safe mode appears to work for you, there must be something broken in your profile. I'd therefore suggest you create a new profile via Profile Manager. Then use Profile manager to start Thunderbird with the new profile. Re-create your account. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/using-multiple-profiles

more options

Thank you

Tried to make Profile Manager appear as you intructed, but did not succeed in enabling the Profile Manager.

I could see my account details and even change the account name to a new one (without changing anything else) via "TB settings>account settings", but nothing else changed. Apparently what I did was not creating a new profile, but just changing the profile name.

The result is that I could not create the profile page window ("Choose User Profile") in the manner described under "Using Multiple Profiles" and was therefore unable to re-create my account.

Unfortunately I am rather inexperienced with problems this complicated and need step-by-step guidance

more options

Check this article for more information about using the profile manager. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_manager

more options

Thunderbird must be closed to open Profile Manager. enter the following in the Windows Run box.

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -P

or if using Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1 64bit

It may be here: "C:\Program Files(x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -P

I now succeeded in opening Profile Manager, thank you. However, I got stuck with the account settings for use with the new profile; the program could not determine network (service provider) settings automatically. When I filled in the current (actual) settings for SMTP (in this case mail.inet.fi for both incoming and outgoing mails), the program did not recognize them). So, while it is ok to use Thunderbird in safe mode, I am not able to check if the change in profile would remove the original problem with the popup windows. Could you pls comment this. I am ready to continue with these trials until the popups turn normal.

more options

Use the Manual Account Configuration instead. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/manual-account-configuration

more options

I have now succeeded with proper manual internet settings for my new profile. Unfortunately this (the new profile) does not solve the original popup problem. The only way for popup windows to open normally seems to be to stick to the safe mode. Now, what next?

more options

OK, just a flyby suggestion.

Goto the tools menu then add-ons. Select the get add-on on the left scroll to the bottom of the window and on the right select see all complete themes. On the first page of themes you will find no glass. select it and then choose Add to Thunderbird.

Does that do anything to fix the dialogs? I am wondering if there is an issue with the default Finnish theme, hence the suggestion to install this as it is very similar, if more colorful.

more options

Thanks Matt. I have not been using any extra themes with my Thunderbird and I did not notice any improvement with NoGlass either, sorry to say. So it seems I am stuck with safe mode, which complicates things somewhat compared with normal mode.

I appreciate any suggestions to overcome this problem with popups. (Without popup windows, Thunderbird is very clumsy to use.)

more options

Matt: Do you think this werid behaviour could have anything to do with the gfx entries in Config Editor?

myllymatti: close any open programs. Check to make sure your graphic drivers are all up to date. Then restart Thunderbird and test. Report back on results.

more options

Thanks. The graphic driver may well be the culprit. I checked the AMD web site and found there a tool to check the driver. According to this tool there is a very recent driver dated 12/2014 recommended for my setup which I have now downloaded and saved. Now, what next? How do I update the existing driver with this new version.

I know this has nothing to do with Thunderbird directly, but I am not used to do anything but automatic program updates and need now guidance to carry out the procedure properly.
