Confused. Version 144.0.1 | Released October 16, 2025 Says 32 bit. I thought I downloaded 64 bit.

Problem: Freezes when I click anywhere on TBird desktop

How do I address the freezing problem?

troubleshooting so far:

• How often? periodically (sometime within minutes of loading, sometime hours).
• uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled Thunderbird (using winget)
• created a NEW profile (have to re-download mail / folders ... taking day(s?) ... since when I walk away and come back hoping download has finished but it has crashed) ... not sure when it will get caught up ( main mail file is huge (20+GB) )
• tried: accessibility.force_disabled changed from 0 to 1 (found suggestion in a google search)
• tried: troubleshoot mode (even though I don't use any add-ons)
• I use multiple mail accounts (although currently I'm only using main one, trying to isolate problems)

I’ve run into a weird issue with Thunderbird on macOS 26 (Tahoe) and I’m wondering if anyone else has seen this.

When I close the main Thunderbird window using Command + W or RedDot Close Button, the window disappears like normal, but something is still left behind. It’s like an invisible or “ghost” window stays on the screen. Because of that, I can’t click anything that was underneath the Thunderbird window. The area is still blocked as if the window never fully closed.

If I open Mission Control (F3), I can see an empty tile where the window should be, which confirms that something is still there even though it’s not visible.

A few details: • The problem happens every time I close the main window with Command + W • Thunderbird keeps running in the background, but I can’t bring the window back unless I quit the app completely • This only happens with Thunderbird, no other app on macOS 26 has this issue on my machines • On previous macOS versions I never had this problem

System info: • macOS 26 (Tahoe), fully updated • Latest stable Thunderbird release • Mac mini M4 and MacBook Air M4

It looks like some kind of window management bug on macOS 26, but only triggered by Thunderbird.

Has anyone else experienced this or knows if it’s a known issue? Thanks!

I am using Thunderbird v140.4esr (32-bit), and the app hangs shortly after I try to create a new email, and I have to close the program and start again. I am using Windows 10 v22H2, current October patch. Whenever I try to create a new email in Thunderbird, I can type about a paragraph or two, then the window with the new email freezes, and the only way I can proceed is to force the program to close and start again. Sometimes I can recover part of the new email by choosing Drafts, but shortly after, it will hang again, and the process starts all over again. This has only started recently. It was functioning properly about a month ago. Why is this happening, and what can I do to mitigate it?

I have experienced Mozilla Thunderbird 140 (or higher) esr (64-bit) running under Windows 11 suddenly freezing up during writing e-mails, particularly (but maybe not exclusively) when a file has been attached to that email (before it has been sent). Has anyone else experienced this, and are there any easy fixes? Thx.

I have used TB since Windows XP days, so very familiar with it. Currently using 140.2.0esr on Windows 10.

Two or three days ago TB updated to 140.x and since then, it has been crashing every time I compose a message. Within two minutes at most, the program hangs, the GUI becomes unresponsive, and Process Explorer reports that TB is using 16.79% of the CPU. It stays that way indefinitely.

After a lot of observation (and saving drafts, and restarting TB over and over and over) I have narrowed this down to typing the apostrophe character. Typing a word like "shouldn't" will hang TB, sometimes on the ' character, and sometimes a second or two later which allows a few more letters to be typed. The problem persists with Troubleshooting Mode enabled.

I have changed nothing in TB. At least, nothing I am aware of. Same keyboard as last week.

Yes, I realize that this sounds crazy.

Hi I have a problem since few weeks. When I try to reply to email and when I try to copy a fragment of the message below, the programme freezes and I have to restart it. Every attempt to copy a fragment of text when replying to an email causes the same thing to happen.

When scanning headers and/or reading messages there are long delays with OS pop up saying Thunderbird is unresponsive. It typically happens when downloads and copying are occurring in the background. TB seems to be giving too much priority to the background making everything in the foreground slow and frequently stop completely. When composing a message a typed line does not appear for 20 seconds or more making it difficult to prevent typing errors. I have not had this problem with older versions of TB. My local message store is well over 20 GB. I expect some operations to take awhile but none should slow or stop response to immediate entry. When TB logs into servers and there are network problems input at the keyboard is often ignored completely. To regain control I have to call the task manager and do end process and restart TB. At first I thought this was a problem with one computer. I have several with a mix of several versions of Windows (7,8,10 and 11) with several email addresses and have the same problem in varying degrees with all of them. If this is a setting problem I have no clue how to fix. I have been using TB more than a decade and feel confident about how to do most operations. I'm using version 140.3.0esr (64bit).

If there's one thing I can count on, it's that the next version of Thunderbird will be more buggy & unstable that the previous version, and v 140 certainly does not disappoint in that category. It crashes & closes multiple times per day. Any time something else may be using a lot of resources, Thunderbird freezes up and if I click on it, the app crashes & closes. At least the previous just stayed greyed out until it was able to complete the task and didn't crash & close. Great job Mozilla.

Since i updated to 144 Thunderbird works well once started for a few minutes and then starts eating memory and in a few minutes it uses all system memory (64GB) and when virtual memory is exhausted it crashes

Now using 145 beta with same problem.

Using google calendar and only one plugin (Clippings for Thunderbird), tried to disable plugins, calendar, hardware acceleration, tried to compact folders, clear cache, clear msf with no success

A few days ago thunderbird started getting clunky and freezing intermittently for about 30-40 seconds each time. I decided to uninstall it and re-install. Now when I launch TB it freezes and will not load at all. Tried opening in safe mode and that didn't work. I have accessed my profile folder but didn't want to do anything until I asked. Its setup as IMAP and I've used it for years with the same settings and never had any issues. Any help would be appreciated.

I'll try to remain calm.

After trying around 20 different email apps to find one that does what I want (which isn't much anyway), I thought I'd try Thunderbird. I had used it many years ago and it was great. Not any more.

Every time I try to add an email account, it crashes. Here's what I've tried to fix it:

Disabled the Account Hub Started Thunderbird in Safe Mode Started Thunderbird in Troubleshoot Mode Created a new Thunderbird profile Checked the antivirus and firewall Gave Thunderbird permission to accept incoming connections Reinstalled Thunderbird twice Tried to manually set up the account offline Disabled hardware acceleration Forced the Profile Manager Manually removed the Account Hub entry from pref.js file Unchecked Thunderbird's access to Mac Contacts MacOS is up to date Created new user on Mac and started with clean install and obviously clean everything - it crashed.

No other mail program fails so spectacularly as Thunderbird. Has anyone got any idea as to what is going on.

I presume there was an update and now Thunderbird won't launch on Fedora 42. I have tried restarting updating thunderbird even uninstall and reinstall but it just won't launch

After the update, the name of the "Spam" folder (Japanese) changed to "Junk" (English), and similarly the name of the trash folder (Japanese) changed to "Trash" (English). As a result, it now freezes on startup. It's very difficult to use.

Hello, I’m unable to add additional email accounts on one of my PCs. I’ve tried everything — uninstalling and reinstalling Thunderbird, deleting cache files in AppData, but nothing works. The program keeps crashing every time.

Bonjour, Je ne parviens pas à rajouter d'autres compte de messagerie sur un de mes pc. J'ai tout éssayé désinstallé réinstaller supprimé les fichiers caches dans AppData mais rien à faire ça plante tout le temps.
