I keep loosing my windows and tabs when FF must be closed for updates

Everytime when I have to close my FF windows and their tabs for i.e. an update/upgrade, FF starts up only with Mozilla Firefox-startpage, instead of my old (closed) windows with their tabs. How do I get them back? Under History "Recent closed Windows" and "Recent closed Tabs" are greyed out. How do I get them back? TIA.
