I do not understand. Can you provide an example of what you wish to achieve? Thank you.
In the Options for the ImportExportTools NG add-on, on the Filenames tab, the file name for saved messages can be customized.

For example, how can I save an email with the Subject "New sign-in on thunderbird" as follows, without having to edit the filename:
New sign-in on thunderbird.eml
and not:
New sign-in on thunderbird - Yahoo (no-reply@cc.yahoo.com) - 2025-04-20 1236.eml
The latter being what Thunderbird does normally. Or my version (137.0.2) does, at least.
Hopefully this will make things clearer.

Yes, I've found that and set it to "Subject".
But when I use SaveAs to save an email it still offers the full (long) filename, and not only the Subject.
If I use "Export Messages As", "EML Message Format", (Attachments Embedded) it opens to a folder and the filename area of the dialog is blank. Clicking "Selected Folder" on the dialog does in fact save the email with the desired name.
However, there's a downside which I find annoying and time wasting; the folder to be saved to isn't remembered so I need to select it for each email that I save.
Just my experience, and maybe I'm overlooking something simple/basic, but I would really appreciate some assistance in order to streamline the process of saving my emails from Thunderbird.
Set the directory for 'Export selected messages' on the Export directories tab of Options.
Amazing! Thank you so much; that's simplified things somewhat.
Sorry to do this, but to make life even slightly easier - is is possible to use SaveAs rather than "Export Messages As", "EML Message Format", (Attachments Embedded), and get the same result? That is, Subject only as filename.
I don't think you can change the default Save As function, but you can ask the add-on developer if it's possible to change it.
Thanks sfhowes for your invaluable assistance; you've made my day!
Cheers,
