while reading an email message, whenever I left click the mouse or touchpad the screen instantly leaves the message and reverts to the email home page, often much farther down the inbox than where I was, sometimes months back. this also happens when writing a new email, for example if I'm trying to move the cursor down the page and left click. the screen reverts to home page.

It looks like the plan for right now is to include the fix for this in the 58.0.2 update, which will be released next week. Assuming you have automatic updates turned on in Firefox (which is the default setting), then the update should automatically install on your computer. In the meantime, you can use one of the workarounds linked above. Hope that helps!

Do you happen to be using Hotmail our Outlook? If so, this is a known bug in Firefox that will be fixed soon. In the meantime, there are a few different ways you can work around this problem listed here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1202966#answer-1072734 .
