The Mozilla Location Service is an open service which lets devices determine their location based on network infrastructure like cell towers and Wi-Fi access points. Mozilla uses the Mozilla Location Service (MLS) for Firefox Nightly desktop users on Linux and Mac that opt in to sharing their location with websites.

Firefox for Android currently uses Android’s built-in Location Service, not MLS, when a user opts in to sharing their location with websites. You can help contribute anonymous location data to improve the service for Firefox desktop users by enabling the MLS in your Firefox for Android settings.

Disable MLS through the notification

When the feature is enabled, Firefox will show a notification in Android 8.0 to let you know that the Mozilla Location Service is running. Turn off this feature by tapping on the notification, which would open the Privacy Settings menu which allows to disable the Mozilla Location Service.

Disable MLS any time

At any time, this feature can also be enabled or disabled by following these steps:

1. Tap the menu button in Firefox (either at the bottom right on some devices or in the upper right of the browser) .
2. Choose Settings.
3. Tap Privacy.
4. Put a check mark next to Mozilla Location Service to turn it on, or remove it to turn it off.
