I used to create desktop shortcuts as described in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/create-desktop-shortcut-website?esab=a&as=aaq

I know use Firefox 17.0.1 on 64-bit Linux. I notice that the above operation does not create a shortcut but instead creates a copy of the web page on my desktop.

Do I do something wrong? Did I turn on an option accidentally?

Thanks in advance for your help Daniel

You didn't mention what distro you are using. On Arch Linux with XFCE, for me I just have to right-click the desktop and then click "Create URL Link".

Not sure with the different versions of Linux, although a shortcut is just a shortcut.

Try just copying the url address and pasting into the target location of a newly created shortcut.

@(yalam96): I'm using ubuntu 12.10 with LXDE Linux perso 3.5.0-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 11 18:51:59 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

@(jddockery): I agree I could create a shortcut to a URL and then paste the URL into the target location of a newly created shortcut. However I was used to a very simple operation (drag the URL and drop it on the desktop) that does not seem to work anymore...

Thanks to yalam96 and jddockery... Your questions pointed me to the issue. The issue is with the LXDE window manager. Dragging the URL and dropping it on the LXDE desktop triggers a copy of the whole web page on the desktop... With Unity the behaviour is different. Dragging the URL and dropping it on the Unity desktop creates a shortcut to the web page... I'll try with XFCE, Gnome, and Cinnamon... just to check their behaviours...

Thanks again

i have Firefox 21.0 and i am running xp. I was reading on your site where i can add a shortcut to the desktop. It said to "click the site icon next to the Location bar". I dont have that site icon or the refresh icon. What do i do?

Thanks

Current Firefox versions show the "Site Identity Button" (globe/padlock) on the location bar, so you no longer have the favicon on the location bar.

You can click the "Restore Default Set" on the Customize window to see if that brings back the reload icon.

  • Firefox menu button > Options > Toolbar Layout
  • View > Toolbars > Customize

You can check for problems caused by a corrupted localstore.rdf file.
