password management 'key' icon does not appear on any toolbar

I can manage passwords using tools -> Options BUT the little 'key' icon, shown in the instructions, is not visible anywhere on my toolbars. (I have ALL of the toolbars displayed.)

Be aware that you only see that key icon if you log in to a website from which you haven't saved the name and password yet and the website doesn't prevent that via autocomplete=off.

I think you must be referring to a third party app or add-on because there isn't a a standard 'key' button you can add to the toolbar to my knowledge.

If it is an add-on of some kind or another, you might find it by right clicking a blank part of the Tab bar, then click "Customize" at the bottom. If you find it in the panel which opens, drag it on to the toolbar.

Firefox 4 and later versions place a key icon on the location bar that allows to (re)open the dialog to save the password at any time.
That pop-up dialog has a button labeled with "Remember Password".
If you click the arrow next to that button then you see the other choices ("Never Remember Password for this site", "Not Now").
The next time that you visit that site then you can click the arrow next to "Remember Password" and select "Never Remember" from the drop down list.

If you do not get that pop-up and that icon then make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.

  • You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
  • To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
  • Deselect: [ ] "Permanent Private Browsing mode"

Thank you, BUT,

1. History says "Remember history"

I have never changed these settings and I've never used private browsing in any way.

The 'key' icon is still missing.

Start Firefox in Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

My Firefox theme is and always has been 'default.'

Restarting in safe mode makes no difference. The icon for accessing password management is still missing.

Sorry

I wish I could remember which demo/introduction video I was watching that showed me that icon.

However, tools -> options -> security is certainly good enough for my needs.

Thank you very much! Jim Kay
