I am happily running Mac OS 10.13.6 (High Sierra) on my MacBook Pro (mid 2012). This OS allows me to use my many 32 and 64 bit apps and have excellent control of my laptop. My bank is saying that my browser (Firefox 88.0.1) needs to be updated. When I check system requirements at mozilla, any newer Firefox claims to need an intel x86 processor INCLUDING the version of Firefox I am now using. My Mac has an intel Core i7 processor. When I click on about Firefox, I'm offered to update to 109.0.1. Will this update actually work for me without losing any functions I already have? Is there a better choice for my Mac and Firefox?

Yes, an Intel Core processor is x86 compatible. Sometimes x86 refers more specifically to 32-bit and x64 refers more specifically to 64-bit, but it really depends on the context.

Mozilla maintains two release series:

  • Regular Release: currently on version 113.0, so if you update to Firefox 109.0.1, your Firefox will eventually prompt you to update again to Firefox 113
  • Extended Support Release: currently on version 102.10.0esr, this gets major version updates annually and has minor updates the rest of the year.

Both of these versions will have the newer "Proton" user interface design introduced in Firefox 89.0, so both will look somewhat different than what you have now. However, I don't know whether that is what has been keeping you from updating for the past couple of years. Do you remember what the reason was?

Thanks for your answer. Am I correct in assuming nothing will be lost in terms of function? I haven't updated bc everything has been working fine for me so far and I can access the bank with another browser. At least once in the past an update failed miserably and I had to ask god for help, sortof.

I have the exact same mac and you can run the current version 113.0.1.
