Note that you trigger a update check if you open "Help -> About Firefox" and possibly download the new version.

It doesn't really matter what Firefox profile you start to finish the update once it has been prepared and a updated folder with the new version has been created in the Firefox installation folder. That last screenshot shows that you have downloaded a new version and that Firefox has created the updated folder and is ready to apply the update and copy the new version stored in the updated folder to replace the current release on the next start. If you do not want to apply the update then you can remove the updated folder in the Firefox installation folder before restarting Firefox (i.e.Quit Firefox and do not click restart).

You're assuming I triggered the update when I opened the help section, which I did not since I opened the about after I noticed the undesirable behavior.

So the only solution is to figure through a crystal ball Firefox is not honoring my settings, and delete some folder?!

Just to be clear, you're telling me that the behavior of not respecting my settings I observed, is the intended behavior of Firefox, and that to prevent it, I should use the "Locking preferences".

I've also reported my settings being "Ask me before installing", and that Firefox didn't ask me....

For whatever it's worth, same situation happened today, I got updated from 98.0 to 98.0.1.

However, I figured out the issue, the "Dismiss" button on the popup where Firefox asks if you want to download the update, in effect does download the update.

Personally, I am fine with updates that fix bugs and add function. I am less fine with function that CHANGES an existing behavior. And I am NOT FINE with an update that changes the value of a setting that I have explicitly set.

In the GENERAL settings section, there is an option for what Firefox does when a PDF is downloaded from the internet. Two of the options are "Save file" and "Always ask." I have it set to "Always ask." Sometimes I want to see the contents of the PDF immediately without saving it somewhere, and sometimes I want to save the file first. On every single Firefox update, this setting is changed to "Save file."

Please don't do that. Leave it where I set it.
