have a box that pops up in the bottom right corner that says "mail server for account ******* responded error: zero-length content." how do I stop it? The only way is to shut my computer down completely and restart it. I tried to upload a screen shot but there were multiple errors with the upload images button on this page.

sounds to me like you have a corrupt message in your mail server. perhaps in the junk/spam folder. Try logging into web mail and deleting what looks like the next mail Thunderbird should be getting.
