Hello,

I am running Thunderbird 38.0.1 (IMAP email) on my macbook (OS X 10.9.5), and am having some issues. I work remotely, and am the only person in our company running Thunderbird. We don't have an IT tech, so I'm hoping to find some help here.

As much as I know, we did a server update last week (switching servers, I believe) and over the weekend, no emails were getting through to me -- getting sent back as undeliverable. At one point, my entire inbox disappeared, and has yet to reappear. I've restarted Thunderbird, tried to "repair" the inbox, etc.

My Sent emails have also disappeared from 5/19-6/29.

What's also curious is that when I search for something, for example, "payment", the search reveals a preview of these emails, however, when I click on them, there is nothing to show.

Is there anything I can do to get these emails back in my inbox? It seems they're still somewhere if the preview is showing...! If you can help, please use layman's terms, as I'm not too technically savvy!

Thank you!!

IMAP mail accounts remotely see what is on the server.

Are you able to logon to webmail account using a browser to see those emails? If yes, then the emails are not lost they are on server.

re :we did a server update last week (switching servers, I believe) and over the weekend, no emails were getting through to me

If they changed the server details, then you will not be able to connect as Thunderbird is probably using the old server settings. You need to know what the new server settings are in order to update them.

RE: It seems they're still somewhere if the preview is showing.. Search is using the last known details stored for global search. It does not mean the emails exist.

Thank you Toad-Hall.

I believe it's still the same server settings, as I'm able to now receive & send emails without any changes being made to IP addresses, etc.

Webmail is not showing any emails prior to this weekend as well...

Anything else I can do...??

If they are not on server then they will not display in Thunderbird imap account. It is in effect one and the same folders.

You could ask your tech server people if they have a backup of server prior to the disruption over weekend, explaingin the loss of everything prior to weekend.

For future reference: Synchronise subscribed folders and then get a copy into Local Folders account which you can backup yourself.

Thanks again. How can I check what server IP address I have at the moment in Thunderbird?

I'm wondering if the emails are just somewhere on my computer, in a folder, even if I did not make any changes myself like that. How would I be able to figure this out? Would I be able to upload these mails to my inbox, should I be able to find them?

Thunderbird can be set to keep a local copy of your messages, mainly for speed of browsing. If it's been set this way, then that local cache of messages can be useful. The trick to making it work is to copy in the data when Thunderbird is offline. When Thunderbird goes online and see messages that have apparently just appeared, it offers them up to the server. An alternative track is to import them into the Local Folders account , so you have them independently of the server.

The ImportExportTools add-on may be useful for this.

Hi Zenos,

This is the directory for Local Folders - would my INBOX be saved here...??

/Users/ML/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/s7j8rfdk.default/Mail/Local Folders

If so, how would I access them and upload them to my inbox...? I'm not even sure this is the correct procedure....

Sorry, I'm kind of confused about this whole situation, how everything has just disappeared, while no one else at my company is having this problem (everyone else uses Outlook).
