Got sick and tired of having to enter payment card info every time, so I decided to RTFM and follow instructions. I worked my way thru all the instructions on found on the forum pages, and was entering the information via about:config, and got to the popup where I was asked to confirm, and clicked the button, then clicked it harder, but nothing happened.

My guess is that my Firefox and/or my Leap15.3 installation has left some file permission read-only and Firefox is unable to save this bit of data, but I really don't want to run Firefox as root. I can say more, but I see there are more boxes to fill.

So, I included a screenshot of what I hope will be the useful part of my config file.

HI! I'm using Firefox 98 on Linux Ubuntu 20.04. after the last update I found several settings changed and I had to reset them, but there is one setting I can't manage. In the download preferences I set all the Microsoft Excel entries to "Always ask", but every time that I try to see an Excel file (no download, just open with ...), this is automatically downloaded. I definitively don't want to download it. How can I change this behavior? P.S.: I realized right now that there is the same problem with .docx files and I don't know how many others file types.

I can't play a video when logged into a website - see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1371380

I'm sure it is not Firefox as I have also tried Chrome and Opera; same problem. How can I debug this and find out why the video cannot be played ?

I see there is 'Remote Debugging' and 'Browser Console' under 'More Tools'. How do I use these or other tools to find out what is causing the problem please ?

Basically, a requested relaunch blanked my profile and I can't get it back.

I have a lengthy workaround that will take over an hour to fix from backups, before this incident, but I'd really like to understand what's going on. How can my add-ons, bookmarks, history, logins, etc. be gone? If I did a refresh on purpose, why would my shortcuts remain intact? And, I started by backing up my profile folder to a neutral spot, so why isn't replacing it reversing the changes?

As background: The "about:profiles/Restart With Add-ons disabled" button brings up a small button dialogue to choose "refresh" or default "open." I selected "open" because I didn't want to fix my profile and assumed I would relaunch with only add-ons disabled, so this was a potential point of screw-up. I assume selecting "refresh" would reset application defaults and make a mess exactly like I find myself in now. Shouldn't "Restart with Add-ons disabled/Open" relaunch a temporary and reversible state? Doesn't "refresh" prompt a new default profile?

Considering evidence only, it appears I did something to roast my profile before I backed it up, but that's strange and really out in the weeds, and I'm assuming I wrecked it with my current activity.

The default profile name and path are correct. My shortcut links and labels that I use for a home page are intact but with icons missing, the same appearance as if I deleted the cache; is this detail part of application settings and not profile?

Impossible to use an unusual port number in local URL

Hi all :)

From a fresh Linux Debian Bullseye I try to connect to a local machine with Firefox (v97 64-bits) by its hostname (avahi server with default domain "local") with the port 6180 bound to a remote web service port (61 is the distant machine IP and 80 is the forwarded port).

When I want to open this URL : http://bionic.local:6180/ FF displays "We can't find this site ... Unable to connect to server at bionic.local ... check your network connection and firewall"

BUT ping bionic.local works perfectly and resolve the good IP address from the Chromium navigator the same URL works without a problem, I can open the distant web site.

This workaround works : add a static resolution in the /etc/hosts file : 192.168.0.71 bionic bionic.local => so FF works in the expected way for now ! But as I said this a workaround and a bad solution.

I supposed too the port was blocked because I accessed an unusual port. So I tried this without success.

How the hell make that FF v97 allows me to use an unusual port ? Or is it bound to the domain "local" which is no more accepted by FF ?

Thank you in advance for your help. With adelphity, lnj

I installed Rust on my laptop and want to browse to the documentation which is installed at file:///home/lochlann/.rustup/toolchains/stable-x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu/share/doc/rust/html/intro.html. I try to open this in Firefox and this fails with the message: Access to the file was denied

The file at /home/lochlann/.rustup/toolchains/stable-x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu/share/doc/rust/html/intro.html is not readable.

It may have been removed, moved, or file permissions may be preventing access.

I have read permissions on the file. No matter, it fails. I try to open the file using Firefox and navigate the directory structure rather than typing in the location. The file opens in the browser, the location is listed as file:///run/user/1000/doc/1f137432/index.html. Can you explain to me why Firefox cannot render a file that is where i put it and has appropriate permissions yet can render the same file where I did not put it? I have always been a fan but this looks more like a virus than I am comfortable with.

I've been noticing lately that Firefox takes a while to start loading pages after it requests a restart or recovers from a crash.

I've followed all the advice in the forums including disabling session restore, but the problem persists.

It seems to be doing a lot of disk activity when it restarts either after requesting a restart or if it crashes and I start it again.

Anything I can do to address this issue?

Fixing the new way of opening files

Hello,

Starting Firefox 97, opening a file involves downloading it the same way as if I choose to save it. It results in both Download folder and downloads list in the browser being polluted with a million of files I only wanted to open once with a specific app (pdfs, xls, m3u etc.).

Previously Firefox was using a hidden internal folder for saving such files and deleting them later, so Open In App really meant "open, do not save locally". Now any option just means "Save the file to the Download folder and let it be there forever".

How can I fix this unsuccessful UX decision apart from downgrading to an older version?

Thank you.

P.S. "If you dislike new features in the latest version of Firefox, your first reaction might be to go back to the previous version. Rather than downgrading, try getting used to the new features..." is probably the worst suggestion you can possibly give to someone with their workflow broken by a sudden update they can't decline with a feature they never asked for.

Firefox and thunderbird: invisible dropdown menus / missing overlay planes

Hi all, due to the occurring problem I cannot select topic to describe best my type of question:

Description of fault: Using Open Suse Leap current version 15.3 (KDE) with all patches installed (zypper dup: no action required) In either thunderbird and firefox application (but e.g. not in dolphin or k3b or gimp...) I have following problem: When pressing any entry in File ... View... bar I do not get a visible dropdown menu to chose from Firefox specific: When I try to use a bookmark folder in the bookmark bar there is no visible dropdown menu to chose from When I try to chose from a dropdown menu inside the content of a web site i will get no visible feedback at all.

BUT: when I want to chose a bookmark that should appear in a dropdown list and I move the mouse to that remembered position I see in the lower left corner the bookmark's address and I can chose it! The same happens with the dropdown menus from the the File.... View... Help line. I am able to chose a command once I remember where to point to.

So I guess all what is missing is the overlay plane where the menu contents reside.

This problem occurs in 95% of the time I use both applications, BUT there are 5% of the time where everything works like a charm. I have no idea what i do differently in that usage. Whenever Firefox works normal, also thunderbird does. Is it somehow a KDE releated problem?

How can I fix that problem? Any hints?

Thank you

Johannes

Hello,

I'm using Firefox 91.4.1esr (64-bit) from Debian repositories on Bullseye. Every time I open Firefox, a window with a greeting message appears ("Say hello to a new Firefox"), and it doesn't matter if, as asked by that window, I choose a theme or not. Is this issue related to my settings? Is this a Debian issue? Is it possible to stop that window from reappearing?

Thanks in advance. And many thanks for making Firefox (I've been using it for so many years I can't recall when I tried it for the first time).

I use different extensions and have been experiencing the same problem intermittently for the second year in a row. For example, I use the Highlight This extension and I need to enter data in languages other than English. The problem is that if I start switching (win + space) layout, the data gets erased (because popup close). Other extensions circumvent this problem by creating a separate page (uBlock), but many do not provide it.
