Fix frustrating bookmarks desktop workflow

Hi Firefoxers, I've recently returned to using Firefox after using Chrome, Vivaldi, and Brave for a long time. Most Firefox things are better than these, but I find the bookmarks handling in Firefox extremely frustrating in comparison.

When clicking the bookmark star, the edit bookmark box pops up. The location dropdown gives me a list of 7 recent folders where I can store the bookmark. If I click "Choose" a tiny little box opens up and, in this extremely cramped space, I have to scroll through hundreds of folders and all their expanded subfolders to find the one I want.

One way other browsers solve this problem is by letting the user right click directly on their bookmarks folders and select "Add bookmark here", which then automatically saves URL, page title etc to that folder. But in Firefox, this just opens up a blank "Add Bookmark" box that doesn't contain any info about the current page, meaning you have to manually enter all the details.

So I'm interested in any help advice about:

a) Increasing the number of recent folders in the location drop-down to make it a lot more than 7.

b) Increasing the size of the "Choose" box so I can see the list of hundreds of folders more comfortable.

c) Stopping all folders being automatically expanded in the "Choose" box.

d) Making Firefox auto-add the details from a current page when clicking "Add Bookmark".

Any help would be appreciated!

Am I understanding this correctly?

HTML backup (bookmarks) doesn't support tags and annotations, but JSON backup does, and JSON backup doesn't preserve the website favicons, but HTML backup does?

So, what I can do, is restore my (saved) bookmarks using JSON backup, then restore the HTML backup, this would get my tags and annotations, and the website favicons back? But the downside, I will need to remove duplicates?

Hi @all,

I reinstalled my computer from scratch with Windows 11, before this reinstallation I had Windows 10. Now I noticed that with the newest Firefox version 109 (that I also had before with Windows 10) and Windows 11 my multirow bookmarks toolbar doesn´t work anymore. Before the reinstallation it worked with the following code:

/* Source file https://github.com/MrOtherGuy/firefox-csshacks/tree/master/chrome/multi-row_bookmarks.css made available under Mozilla Public License v. 2.0
See the above repository for updates as well as full license text. */

/* Makes bookmarks toolbar span multiple rows */

#PersonalToolbar{
  --multirow-bmb-n-rows: 3; /* Control how many rows are shown before scrolling */
  --multirow-bmb-row-margin: 2px; /* Control how much spacing is between rows */
  max-height: none !important;
}

#PlacesToolbar > hbox{
  display: block;
  width: 100vw;
}

#PlacesToolbarItems{
  display: flex;
  flex-wrap: wrap;
  /* --uc-bm-padding is defined in autohide_bookmarks_toolbar.css */
  max-height: calc(var(--multirow-bmb-n-rows) * (5px + 1em + (2 * (var(--multirow-bmb-row-margin) + var(--uc-bm-padding,2px))))) !important;
  overflow-y:auto;
  scrollbar-color: var(--lwt-accent-color) var(--toolbar-bgcolor) ;
  scrollbar-width: thin;
}

/* Hide the all-bookmarks button */
#PlacesChevron{ display: none }

/* Add some spacing between rows */
#PlacesToolbarItems > .bookmark-item{ margin: var(--multirow-bmb-row-margin) 3px !important;  }

I already tried some other codes that I found in the internet but none of them worked. I have this code in the file userChrome.css, this file is in a chrome folder and this folder is in my profile folder. Can anybody tell me what I have to do to make the multirow bookmarks toolbar working again?

Best regards heusmich

I have created a number of folders for bookmarks and clicking on the folder used to produce a long list for each. Now, possibly since the latest update, the list is abbreviated and doesn't show bookmarks that, if I open in a tab and click "edit", are shown as being in the folder. The only forum article I have seen on the topic seems far too complicated for me to understand.

It's not clear to me from the general help instructions how to get my passwords and bookmarks from my old computer to my new one. All the files from my old computer were transferred into one big folder and placed on the Desktop of my new computer. I don't know how to find the right file in the backup and where I need to copy it to on my new computer. I know a while ago I had to recover my passwords, but I forget the steps I went through and it was all on the same computer so slightly different situation although as I recall it was not all that difficult. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having a problem and need your help. Every time I try to go to Gmail (gmail.com) or Google Earth (earth.google.com), I get redirected to this site called grandid.com which is the website my school uses to log in to school accounts. This is my home cumputer so i am not intrestend in that and would like to completly block grandid.com from ever redirecting me. It's blocking me from logging into my accounts and using these services.

I've cleared my cache and cookies and even tried blocking grandid.com with extensions, but nothing is working. This is really frustrating and messing up my ability to check my emails and use Google Earth.

Can you please help me fix this?

Hello, Since the last update Firefox 128.0.3, I can't add bookmarklet. There is one bookmarklet I regularly use on my main profile, wanted to add it to another profile, but it's not adding there. If I try to drag & add, it shows the new bookmark add dialogue, but nothing is getting added. If I try manual add bookmark from bookmark manager, still nothing happens. The bookmarklet is working fine in the main profile btw.. but can't add it to another. I looked in the browser console using Ctrl+Shift+J, it shows the following two messages repeatedly. `Places - Transactions: Failed to execute batched transaction: Error: Bookmarks.sys.mjs: insert: Invalid value for property 'url': "javascript:\"use strict\";function _array_like_to_array(arr,len){(null==len||len>arr.length)&&(len=arr.length);for(var i=0,arr2=new Array(len);i<len;i++)arr2[i]=arr[i];return arr2}function _array_with_holes(arr){if(Array.isArray(arr))return arr}function _array_without_holes(arr){if(Array.isArray(arr))return _array_like_to_array(arr)}function _assert_this_initialized(self){if(void 0===self)throw new ReferenceError(\"this hasn't been initialised - super() hasn't been called\");return self}function _class_call_check(instance,Constructor){if(!(instance instanceof Constructor))throw new TypeError(\"Cannot call a class as a function\")}function _defineProperties(target,props){for(var i=0;i<props.length;i++){var descriptor=props[i];descriptor.enumerable=descriptor.enumerable||!1,descriptor.configurable=!0,\"value\"in descriptor&&(descriptor.writable=!0),Object.defineProperty(target,desc…` and </p> `Error: Bookmarks.sys.mjs: fetch: Invalid value for property 'url': "javascript:\"use strict\";function _array_like_to_array(arr,len){(null==len||len>arr.length)&&(len=arr.length);for(var i=0,arr2=new Array(len);i

As of a few days ago whenever I start Firefox the window appears with the Bookmarks sidebar panel already opened. I click the "X" on the sidebar and it will close - until the next time I start Firefox. If I choose Menu->View->Sidebar->Bookmarks and uncheck it the panel will close - until the next time I start Firefox. No matter how the Bookmarks sidebar is closed, it will always reappear when Firefox is restarted. Even if I switch to some other sidebar, Bookmarks will replace it on startup.

I've searched about:config and found no setting which seems to control sidebar behavior on startup.

I assume this is the result of some recent update. Is there no longer a way to permanently disable the Bookmarks sidebar?
