Our IT department—what a great way to start a question—does not roll out regular updates for Flash. To bridge this security gap for Firefox on my work computer, I copy the following files:

  • flashplayer.xpt
  • FlashPlayerPlugin_<version>.exe
  • FlashUtil32_<version>_Plugin.exe
  • NPSWF32_<version>.dll

from C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash on another machine and paste them to C:\Users\<myusername>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Plugins on my work machine. When Firefox starts, it scans the various locations (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Plugin_scanning) and finds both this version and of course the outdated version originally installed, which IT does not update (currently 11.1.102.55). This effectively updates Flash, and until IT finds a solution to distribute updates I'll have to continue to update Flash manually (Java is unfortunately not so easy to fix), but still leaves me with a problem.

My perceived problem is that Firefox still scans the default installation directory of Flash and thus finds the outdated version. Under Add-ons > Plug-ins, I can select from "Ask to Activate," "Always Activate" and "Never Activate." If I select "Ask to Activate" for the current version (12.0.0.43) and "Never Activate" for the old version (11.1.102.55), upon restarting Firefox it sets both to "Ask to Activate." I conclude that Firefox does not treat separate Flash versions independently. Since constantly being prompted to activate Flash is bothersome, I could just set both to "Always Activate," but that leaves an old, even-more-compromised-than-the-current version of Flash activated.

The best solution, I suppose, would be to uninstall the outdated version of Flash, but I don't have the administrative rights to do so, and don't want to pester our IT administrators. I could prevent Firefox from scanning the directories specified in the Windows registry for PLIDs (see above link), but this would prevent it from finding my also-outdated-but-only-installed Java Plug-In, which I keep thinking I need. The behavior I'm after is to prevent Firefox from scanning or finding the old Flash version, while still finding my Java Plug-in. How could I go about this?

Thanks

I am running Firefox 26 on Windows 7. Last night Windows needed to do some security updates so I closed Firefox as I normally do by using the exit tab and let Windows go ahead with its updates. This morning I found that Firefox had been deleted. I looked to see that my sessionstore.js file from last night still existed and it does. When Firefox came up all of my tabs were gone, also my bookmarks, add-ons, etc. I clicked on "restore previous session" but nothing happens. I have a bookmarks file from last night in the bookmarks folder, and the sessionstore.js file is dated from last night when I closed Firefox in a normal manner. I'm stumped. Firefox didn't crash, I closed it as I always do before I allowed Microsoft to update Windows and reboot. What am I missing/doing wrong? I'm leaving this session open so that I can continue to have access to that sessionstore file, plus I have copied it to a folder I use for these kinds of disasters. This necessary windows update also deleted my MailWasher Pro program, changed the way that Windows Explorer operates and other "fun" surprises. Thanks Microsoft. It is barely possible that I can recreate my tabs and that would be hugely aggravating, but I have no way of re-creating all of my bookmarks. I need help.

Windows 7 Home Premium x64 Firefox 26.0 Not an addon issue - I've loaded up Fire Fox 2.6 and the same addons on a different computer and experienced no problems. Addons: Noscript (added after problem occured, not the cause) Adblock Plus, Adblock Plus Edge, Adblock Plus Popup Addon Plugins

  • Shockwave Flash 11.9 r900
  • Google Update
  • Next Generation Java Plug-in 10.51.2 for Mozilla browsers
  • Unity Player 4.3.1f1
  • Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 11.0.03
  • NPWLPG (did some self research on this, windows live photo gallery plugin. Not the cause)
  • Roblox Launcher Plugin

Computer is free of viruses. Scanned with Malwarebytes, Spybot Search and Destroy 2.0, AVG 2014, adwcleaner (powerful adware cleaner) No reset option for Firefox 26.0.

Whenever I go to a page on Firefox, such as google.ca (I'm living in Canada), the URL bar shows the URL for a split second and goes back to "Search or enter address" as though I haven't typed anything in for the first place. However, when I right click the URL bar when this happens the Undo option is selectable and not grayed out. When I clicked Undo the URL, https://www.google.ca, was back like normal.

The other issue is that whenever I'm typing something in on a webpage, like a search on google.ca, if the URL bar is blank like usual the | that appears when typing jumps to the URL bar and continues typing there. It is HIGHLY irritating whenever I'm trying to write a lengthy forum post and such or a quick search on YouTube and it cuts off and starts appearing in the URL bar where I need to click where I was previously typing and continue. I don't understand what's going on.

We use Citrix XenApp and want to manually update our read only VDisk but do not want to get prompted to update Mozilla every time a browser page is launched once out of sync with the current version of Mozilla. We have modified tools > Options >advanced > never check for updates, but this seems to not work for us. Users are still getting prompted. Is there any way I can suppress this at a lower level? We will updated Mozilla soon after release, but our roll-out schedule is not always in line with your release. We just trying to make a smoother end user experience for everyone.

Hi

We use FFox in a corporate environment due to issues with IE on certain intranet pages.

The existing version 17 had a number of files that we used to customise and lock down firefox, ie preventing users going in in safe mode etc.

These files no longer appear to be present in v24.2.0

I need to prevent users from pressing the shift key and entering ffox in safemode as they could disable/remove the plugins we use to assist locking down the application.

Can someone please advise on how I can achieve this in this version.

thanks

Mozilla has been so easy to use until now???? Very frustrating.

I am developing an application using jQuery and AngularJS. Part of the app involves dragging a element and dropping it onto another.

In the onDrop function I display a popup, which is just a div element. The popup is briefly displayed and then the browser attempts to go to another URL which it then tells me is invalid. At no point in this procedure do I try to load a new page or even make any http calls to the server. The function works in Chrome, IE9+ and Opera.

If you email me, I can give you a logon to the demo system to see the behavior for yourself.

Many thanks! Craig
