Hi Mike, does this problem only occur when you first start Firefox using your desktop icon, or does it also occur when you create a new window (Ctrl+n) or at other times?
For launch-only problems, the problem can be a compromised shortcut. right-click the icon > Properties > Shortcut tab. The "Target" for 64-bit Windows 7 should be no more and no less than the following:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
Hi Mike, since this problem affects both IE and Firefox, if hijacked shortcuts are not the cause, it would be useful to investigate your connection setting. Although normally you would just send network requests through your ISP, if they are being redirected to another source, that can cause Bad Things to happen.
In Firefox, the default is to piggyback on your IE connection settings. You will see that here in the Options:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Network mini-tab > "Settings" button
The default setting is "Use system proxy settings" but you also can select "No proxy" to try to connect as directly as possible.
For IE, you have the choice of accessing Internet Options through the IE menus (which keep changing, but you can tap the Alt key to get the classic Tools menu) or the Windows Control Panel. On the Connections tab, click the LAN settings button and clear all the options so nothing is checked. (This assumes you do not intentionally use a proxy.)
Does that make any difference?
(Just a note that to Windows, LAN is your broadband connection, whether you operate a home network or not, and whether it is hardwired or wireless.)
