Firefox freezing showing frozen image of recently viewed flash objects, and repeatedly crashing

Firefox repeatedly freezes after 30 minutes or so of use, and strangely when freezing it shows a blank page but with freeze frames recently opened YouTube videos and other flash objects, although it may not be all specific to flash. I can't remember exactly but there may have been some non-flash things showing too, but as far as I'm aware it was flash. It keeps doing this repeatedly and finally crashes. If I could give a number of how many times I've had to go through these repeated crashes, they have happened about 500-1000 times in the last 6-ish months. I can't go a day without them. They happen numerous times a day.

And here's the bit that stumps me. I've did the normal extension troubleshooting procedure, but even when every single plugin has been disabled at one point, it still crashes, so no extension can be the problem (also these crashes started about a year ago and the plugins and extensions hadn't been causing many problems before then). I also tested plugins, disabling any I didn't need and thought could be causing a problem, but it still crashed. I have even uninstalled and reinstalled flash, and updated it numerous times in the hope that the crashes would stop. But they haven't. I have EVEN switched from Firefox Beta (which I was in when it started) to Firefox (which still caused crashes) and now to Aurora, which, as you guessed it, STILL causes crashes. I can be on any page at all and it will crash. I have sent hundreds and hundreds of angered crash reports, no update or fix has been given that has helped the problem. I'm pretty desperate for answers at this point.

Below are all the crashes that have happened this month.

Right I tried it in Safe Mode and it STILL crashed (unbelievable I know). Normally I have AdBlock enabled anyway, but it still crashed with that.

Here are all crash IDs since 6:00pm 17th June:

Forgot to mention, the very last crash (i.e. the top one) is the one in Safe Mode.

I had actually had to try to restart in Safe Mode MANY times because it wouldn't restart after clicking restart in safe mode, it would just close.

what happens if you set the preference to false

more options

So I set whatever that was to false but it doesn't seem to have had any effect. I switched to the YouTube HTML5 player and now when firefox does freeze it doesn't show those freeze frames of a youtube video, but for the past few weeks I've been having this other problem where every now and then elements in a webpage keep flashing black rapidly and just disappear and corrupt, and if I wait long enough the same thing happens to the firefox UI, it rapidly appears and disappears. Normally this results in a freeze and a crash, but not all the time, for example it happened just now and I was able to screenshot it.

http://i.imgur.com/zylaQPr.png

Also note that HTML5 video playback is almost always flashing black too.

more options

Wait I've just checked in about:config that layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled WASN'T disabled, so I did that just now and I'll report back any effects.

more options

Yeah it didn't seem to do anything at all unfortunately. Crashing seems to becoming more frequent now.

Here are the latest crash reports:

Hi SpikeballUnion, As they work on the memory shrink and large memory allocation: one of the bugs affected mentioned that there were changing not wanting 2 GB+ arrays being called. Does there happen to be a web page where this may be consistently happening on?

The issue is waiting on a bug that is investigating "virtual memory *fragmentation* leading to premature exhaustion" which can happen when the browser is left open for a few days, or starts to allocate smaller amounts of memory when it is already using a large amount. (2-3gb threshold) as far as I read.

Where there any improvements seen in 33?

Your crashes are very much all over the map. And almost no two are alike. A sampling below including a few bug reports.

I'm probably not a good person to advise on this situation ... but other than reducing your addon count I'm not sure what to say other than hang tight, wait a month and see what gets better.

guigs2, update 33 is not being given to me yet. I'm still having the issue I mentioned earlier where it keeps asking me to download the exact same version every time even when I update. Only after a long while does it actually change. It's been asking me to update to 32.0a2 for over a month now on almost every startup.

And the crash happens on absolutely any webpage. There is something seriously going wrong because when it freezes the fact it is displaying random freeze frames of flash objects (YouTube videos) I've been watching 10 or more minutes before means there's something keeping them and accumulating them in memory. But then again even when I switched to HTML5 player it doesn't do the freeze frame thing but it still crashes.

And Wayne Mery disabling all addons was one of the first things I tried, then quite recently I tried in Safe Mode to no avail. Still crashes. It's like I can't escape it.

I will wait and see in future updates.

There are still a lot of reports that are about out-of-memory issues.

You could try a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling a fresh copy of Firefox.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

more options

Ok I will try to do a clean reinstall as it seems to be the only option left,

but there's one thing I need to ask before I do it.

If I copy all the addons in my "Profile" folder, then also copy the places.sqlite, reinstall the program, then copy back those files, will that save all my personal data?

more options

And also what about tabs? (Because I have 42 important ones in use which I need to save somewhere)

more options

Hi SpikeballUnion, Will that save all of your personal data? This will depend what you want to save. The data will be listed Here "What information is stored in my profile"

Tabs specifically are in either the specific session, if you have remember tabs from last time selected sessionstore.js, sessionstore.bak and sessionstore-xxxxxxx.bak.

Also see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox

Thank you

more options

I uninstalled and reinstalled firefox to no effect. Can I just clarify whether or not I had to delete a folder such as the profile folder?

more options

Did you delete the Firefox program folder or at least check that there were any files left in it before reinstalling Firefox?

Did you try to boot the computer in windows Safe Mode?

more options

No I'll try that next, but I'm not that keen on booting in Safe Mode since my laptop is quite old and rebooting is often unstable, and not only that but it takes literally 15 minutes to get up and ready and then 10 more minutes to get all my applications running (including Firefox)

but I do have this extra information to share:

http://i.imgur.com/TCl2wIB.png http://i.imgur.com/N6geJOV.png http://i.imgur.com/uMXgU3i.png

These glitches pictured above are happening almost all the time, and they almost always preceed a crash.

more options

> Did you delete the Firefox program folder or at least check that there were any files left in it before reinstalling Firefox?

This won't be the issue - he's had issues across several channel versions and several installs.

The crashes are OOM so the short term scenaro (assuming no immediate fixes in firefox) are the typical suspects: addons, too many tabs, or a problematic URL.

My advice is to a) to address your slow PC issues clean up your PC. It shouldn't take 15 minutes to get back to a running state. get rid of software you don't need especially the big stuff, update the rest, delete/offload files like hell to get to at least 30-40% free disk and defrag it several times b) get rid of as many firefox addons as you can, these can be a source instability. There are probably only a couple in your list that you can't live without. Be ruthless. c) enable 3GB support on your vista so you can get 3GB for firefox, which is by default limited to 2GB on your 32bit OS d) find out which previous version of firefox was most stable for you, and use that version until mozilla sorts out these memory issues.

more options

oh, and install flashblock addon if you have not already
