The arrow is supposed to change on a hyperlink into a "hand, with the index finger extended" to signify "pressing" on the link. Changing to a magnifying glass is incorrect.

Try the Firefox SafeMode to see how it works there.
A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.

• You can open the Firefox 15.0+ SafeMode by holding the Shft key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
• Or use the Help menu item, click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled... while Firefox is running.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.

If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.

Or it might be caused by Hardware Acceleration.

When you figure out what is causing that, please let us know. It might help other user's who have that problem.

Thanks. Update: it seems to be site specific (and remains so in Safe Mode). That is, normally I get the extended finger, but at MyYahoo.com, in the news area top center (only), it turns into a magnifying glass with a '+' in the center. I can't say that was or wasn't there before, but I can say that Yahoo does a lot of weird things (many more since Marissa Meyer took over). Should I report this to Mozilla? I'd provide a screenshot, but the cursor doesn't show up with Print Screen.

I am seeing a CSS "move" cursor on those News bars, which for me allows me to drag (with a left-click/hold and drag motion) the "News for You" section down below the "Today" section to rearrange that section of the page.

Here's an example page - http://www.gtalbot.org/DHTMLSection/Cursors.html - where when you hover over the cursor name in the left column, the appropriate cursor appears. The fifth one down the "Move" cursor will show.

At the CSS page, it's the zoom-in cursor (magnifying glass with '+') I'm seeing on the news links.

On the uploaded screenshot, the top line of the section, "Yahoo! News - Latest News and Headlines," shows with the finger on the link itself (underline) and as a four-arrow cross just slightly higher, which allows it to be moved. The magnifying glass shows on all the news links below that. It's that way in FF and IE10 and Opera Next (~18), but the cursor remains an arrow on those with Opera 12.16.

So I'm taking it this something Yahoo did for whatever reason?

I don't see anything like a cursor on your screenshot, and my utility screenshot program (which I bought in 1999) is too old to recognize the "move" cursor, although I engaged the pref for showing the cursor. So I can't show you what I am seeing here.

It didn't occur to me to ask until I revisited the page just now and saw that the section I dragged down was reset to the default location.

I wonder if that's why what I see differs from what you are seeing?

On Opera 12.00 and IE 8.0 I am seeing the same "move" cursor, as in Firefox 24.0.

Yes, logged in at my.yahoo.com. Along the way with recent versions of 12, I've experienced a few things that are different than others see, so who knows.

Unfortunately, the cursor doesn't show on screenshots with Print Screen. With other screenshot apps, or at least Easy Capture, one has to move the cursor to take the shot.

Sorry, I have run out of ideas. Hopefully another support contributor will have some ideas that I haven't covered.

Just curious, if you create a new profile (leave your old one) Do you see the issue there? Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles

Also, are you using any custom Mouse toolkits from your mouse manufacturer (assuming you are using a mouse and not a touch pad)

Thanks for the idea. Created new profile. No difference. Mouse is Nexus Laser Silent, no special programs.

I don't consider this much of a problem - hadn't noticed it before today. Just something that didn't seem right, so I posted it and then discovered it was not only site specific, but part of site specific.

Do you have a userChrome.css file in the chrome folder that might making such changes?

The customization files userChrome.css (user interface) and userContent.css (websites) are located in the chrome folder in the Firefox profile folder.

You can also check the Windows accessibility settings to see if the magnifier is enabled.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

No Chrome and userChrome.css is not on my computer. It's not convenient right now to go into Safe Mode, but not sure it's necessary: if the magnifier is enabled, wouldn't I be seeing the cursor change in a lot more than one part of one website?

Firefox 23.0.1 also displays the "move" cursor on various box headings. This design seems to be targeted at replacing iGoogle (or perhaps it has been draggable for a while).

Edit: For other links, I just get the usual "pointer" cursor. Windows 7. No touch devices.

Did you check the settings in the mouse driver (Control Panel) to see if you haven't enabled some cursor change setting?

Jefferson, anything unusual showing with CSS rules for the links in that area? That's where the magnifier cursor is appearing for him.

Come on, if there had been a change, for instance through file corruption - I haven't opened the mouse settings for months - wouldn't I be seeing it in more than one specific place?

Mouse cursors only change if there is a CSS rule or something else like an extension or theme is overriding the mouse pointer.

You can try a clean reinstall (delete the Firefox program folder) or a new profile to see if that has effect.

Reinstalling FF is easy enough, but if the cursor change is occurring in IE10 and Opera Next too (see my 11:01am post), then what's the point?

Could you try disabling Yahoo from customizing the screen for touch-capable devices? I have no idea whether that will help, but I think it's worth ruling out.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste touch and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the dom.w3c_touch_events.enabled preference and change the value to 0 (zero) which should disable pages from doing this.

If you reload Yahoo, do you notice any difference?

No difference with Yahoo after close/reopen FF.

Did "complete" uninstall with Revo Pro, but new install shows all the add-ons, plugins and extensions, so that doesn't seem the way. And earlier, creating a new profile made no difference.

From a practical point of view, for me this is not a problem. However, if it's something wrong with FF (and IE10 and Opera webkits), as opposed to Yahoo, then I suppose it should be pursued.

Sorry, I had to log in to see what was going on. Certain links open in an overlay (the "Reader") and these appear to be designated with a "zoom-in" cursor.
