Firefox 23.0.1 crashes a lot. My internet, especially Facebook & Facebook games are extremely slow & hang up my entire system.

more options

Ever since I installed Firefox 23.0.1, I have had many problems. Firefox is very slow to open and crashes several times a day, especially if I'm on Facebook. The internet, especially Facebook & Facebook games are very slow. When Facebook updates, it is so slow that it hangs up my entire system.

My router and cable modem are working correctly. I recently installed new ethernet cables between the cable modem, router and computer. Brighthouse was here last week and I have a strong internet signal. All of my plug ins are up to date and so is Windows XP. I have cleaned my browser's cache several times. Closing and restarting Firefox helps for a little while.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

You can check for problems with current Flash plugin versions and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

Can make this happen pretty consistently on many pages with two different computers with different Firefox installations. Here is an example page that hangs every time: http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?p=2598455

Pretty much everything in forum.joomla.org causes a hang. Hangs in safe mode on both computers as well.

Here v23.0.1 in WinXP is also hanging a lot, usually after Firefox has been left running a while. It's very annoying.

I run FlashBlock, and NoScript (allowing scripts only as necessary), and never leave a tab with Flash enabled, as Flash is so horribly inefficient and poorly coded. So it's not Flash in my case, methinks.

It got so bad this evening firefox was crashing every five minutes. I finally took time out and started moving everything to chrome.

I have been a loyal user since the days of netscape and I hope I'm not bidding firefox a sad farewell :(

Hi Jim.OBrien, Firefox may be interacting with something else that updated, such as a security toolbar or graphics card driver. Hopefully it can be vanquished as quickly as it appeared.

Can you start a new thread with some additional information about your system and crashes? When you submit crash reports to Mozilla, code are created that you can post here so volunteers can see more information about the crashes and hopefully gain insight into how to stop them.

Hi Jim.OBrien, I found you posted some IDs here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/958651#answer-485052

Three of the five crash reports contain data, and are linked to bugs that mention Norton extensions. There are some known problems with Norton extensions in Firefox 24, so try disabling those. You may need to use Firefox's Safe Mode to do it.

To start Firefox in Safe Mode (a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions and some custom settings, see Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode), hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)

Then disable your Norton extensions here:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category

When you exit and restart normally, is stability improved?

Someone suggested that I update norton which I did. no real changes.

I'll try disabling the norton extension and see if that helps.

BTW here are the crashes that I've had so far today:

Firefox 24 seems to have solved the problem.

I don't use Norton. It's garbage. When I did use Norton, it caused more problems than it solved.

After disabling the Norton extensions things seem a little better then yesterday. Only 2 crashes. Lot more stable then when I first posted. FF was crashing immediately when I brought it up. FF is still grabbing a lot of cycles (90%+) so we still have a ways to go.

Any further suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Actions taken to-date:

Updated FF Updated Graphics driver Disabled all unnecessary extensions (real down loader etc) Disabled Norton.

Updating the graphics driver and disabling Norton seemed to have the biggest impacts.

Hi Jim.OBrien

Unfortunately the two linked crash reports have an [@ EMPTY] signature, so there is no data available that would make it possible to tell something about the cause of the crash.

Did you try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox?

Have you tried upgrading to Firefox 24? It seems to have solved my problem, but I don't use Norton.
